Historical information

Although Pilkington (later Pilkington ACI) is a global glass manufacturer dating back to the 19th century, the Braybrook factory itself dates to 1962.

The factory was built during a major wave of industrial expansion in Melbourne’s inner‑west, a period when Braybrook shifted from “noxious trades” to modern manufacturing.

Significance

The Pilkington building is one of the most architecturally distinctive and historically important industrial sites in Melbourne’s west due to its unusual and elaborate architectural design, combining strong horizontal lines, stepped brick parapet, steel hopper windows, circular facade and raised concrete framing.
