Historical information
These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, formed part of a special series documenting Sunshine.
These images feature the former John Darling and Son Flour Mill located at 74 Sydney Street, Albion.
The John Darling & Son Flour Mill was established in 1926 - 27 after an earlier mill on the site was destroyed by fire.
Operated by the prominent flour milling company John Darling & Son, the mill processed wheat from Victoria's grain-growing regions and was strategically located beside the railway network to facilitate the transport of grain and flour.
The complex expanded over time with the addition of concrete and stainless-steel silos.
In 1962, John Darling and Sons (Australia) Ltd was acquired by Allied Mills Limited.
In 1986, Allied Mills became part of Goodman Fielder, which then owned the Albion Flour Mill and by 1990 the mill had ceased operations.
Significance
The John Darling & Son Flour Mill at 74 Sydney Street, Albion, is a historically significant industrial complex constructed in 1926-27 for one of Australia's major flour milling companies.
Located beside key railway infrastructure, the mill processed grain from Victoria's wheat-growing regions and contributed to the industrial development of Melbourne's west.
The site comprises a substantial brick roller flour mill, storehouse, rail sidings, loading facilities and concrete silos added throughout the twentieth century.
As one of the most intact flour milling complexes remaining in Victoria, it remains an important landmark and reminder of Albion's industrial heritage.
