Historical information
These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, feature Ian Baker MP officiating at the opening of the new $4 million AKZO Nobel Resin Plant at 51 McIntyre Road, Sunshine North.
The Resin Plant produces industrial resins, which are a key ingredient used in the manufacture of paints, coatings, varnishes, inks, and other surface-finishing products. Resins act as the binder that holds pigment particles together and helps coatings adhere to surfaces.
The Sunshine North site had its origins as the Courtaulds Coatings plant, which manufactured materials for the paints and coatings industry.
When AKZO Nobel opened the new $4 million resin plant in 1999, it modernised and expanded the production of these chemical resins for use in both Australian and international coating products.
Significance
The investment represented a significant modernisation of the plant and reinforced Sunshine North's continuing importance as a centre for industrial manufacturing in Melbourne's western suburbs.
