Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1989, feature the Westend Market operating from the former Wunderlich industrial factory complex located on McIntyre Road, Sunshine North.

The former asbestos factory was commonly known as the Wunderlich Factory or Wunderlich Ltd Sunshine Works. The factory was established in 1927 by the Wunderlich company and manufactured terracotta products, faience cladding, asbestos-cement building sheets marketed as "Durabestos", and asbestos pipes.

The site's ownership changed several times: Wunderlich Ltd (1927 - 1969), CSR (Colonial Sugar Refining Company) (1969 - 1977) & James Hardie (1977 - 1983).

After the factory closed in 1983, the complex was redeveloped as the Westend Market, Westend Hotel, nightclub and other commercial premises.

Significance

The images document the adaptive reuse of an industrial site, demonstrating how former manufacturing premises were transformed into a new commercial and community-focused space. As traditional industries declined or relocated, developments such as the Westend Market provided new uses for these large buildings, reflecting the economic and social changes occurring throughout Melbourne's western suburbs during the late twentieth century.
