The Sunshine Ladies Benevolent Society emerged from the wider network of Victorian Ladies’ Benevolent Societies, which were the main providers of outdoor relief before formal government welfare existed.

These societies were typically run by local women.

They operated from churches, Mechanics’ Institutes, and private homes.

Their purpose was to support families in distress, the elderly, widows, and the unemployed.

As Braybrook Junction transformed into Sunshine under H.V. McKay’s industrial expansion, the need for local welfare services grew, and a women‑run benevolent group formed to meet that need.
