Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, document a guided tour of the former H.V. McKay Trade Wing in Morris Street, Sunshine.

At the time, plans were being considered to redevelop the historic trade school building as a residential apartment complex. However, the proposal did not proceed. The building was subsequently demolished, and the site was redeveloped as the Sunshine Gardens Care Community retirement village.

Significance

The photographs capture a period of transition in the history of the former H.V. McKay Trade Wing, illustrating changing approaches to the reuse of historic educational and industrial buildings. The proposed conversion reflects broader urban redevelopment trends in Sunshine, where heritage structures were being repurposed to meet contemporary community and housing needs while retaining a connection to the area's industrial past.
