Historical information

The Sydenham transmitter is a 705‑foot (215 m) steel lattice mast, one of the tallest radio masts in Australia.

It was built when 3LO moved its transmission site from Maidstone / Braybrook site to Sydenham in 1938.

This photograph was taken by The Advocate in 1988 and later published in a 1989 article discussing speculation about the site’s future. By that stage, the decision had been made: the structure would remain.

Significance

The 3LO transmitter at Sydenham is one of the most important pieces of broadcasting infrastructure in Victoria.

The site is officially the ABC Radio Mast and Transmitter Station, Sydenham Road, Sydenham, built in 1938, and it still broadcasts 774 kHz ABC Melbourne (3LO) today
