These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, document the Ballarat railway line level crossing at Station Road, Deer Park.

At the time, the crossing was a major transport junction serving Deer Park and the rapidly growing Derrimut area. Increasing traffic volumes contributed to congestion and raised concerns about safety for motorists, pedestrians and rail services.

The level crossing remained a prominent feature of the local transport network until 2023, when it was removed as part of a major grade-separation project. The railway line was elevated over Station Road, and a new Deer Park Station opened on 24th April 2023, permanently eliminating the crossing and significantly improving traffic flow and safety in the area.

Significance

The photographs provide a valuable record of infrastructure that once formed an important part of the local transport network but has since been significantly altered.
