Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, feature Barry Mitchell, Director, and Jessica Goldsworthy, Social Worker, of Uniting Care (formerly Sunshine Christian Services) located at 28 Withers Street, Sunshine.

The photographs were published in connection with a forthcoming Sunday service celebrating the agency’s 30th anniversary. The service was to include special prayers led by Rev. John Mavor in recognition of three decades of community service and support provided by the organisation.

Rev. John Mavor AM was a senior minister of the Uniting Church in Australia and served as President of the Assembly from 1997 to 2000. He was widely recognised for his leadership in ministry, mission, and community service, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1999.

Significance

Sunshine Christian Services was a welfare and community support agency established in Sunshine around 1969 under the auspices of the Methodist and later Uniting Church. The organisation provided practical assistance and community services to residents of Melbourne's western suburbs and became part of the broader UnitingCare network. In 1999 it celebrated its 30th anniversary, marked by a special service attended by Uniting Church President Rev. John Mavor AM. The agency later became UnitingCare Sunshine and Broadmeadows and, in 2012, became part of Lentara UnitingCare.
