Historical information

After nearly 20 years of negotiations between the City of Sunshine, the City of Essendon and various other authorities, this cable stayed bridge open in 1991.

The Afton Street Pedestrian Bridge is located down stream of where the Commonwealth defense industry once a bridge had to cross the Maribyrnong River, linking the Explosives Factory at Maribyrnong with its waste‑burning and disposal grounds on the opposite bank. The foundations of this bridge can still be seen today.

Significance

The Afton Street Pedestrian Bridge today is one of the significant river crossings that is used purely for public access and recreation that connects the walking and bicycle path to the North and South sides of the Maribyrnong River.
