Historical information

The Afton Street Pedestrian Bridge is historically significant because it sits on the exact site where the Commonwealth defence industry once crossed the Maribyrnong River — linking the Explosives Factory at Maribyrnong with its waste‑burning and disposal grounds on the opposite bank.

The Afton Street Pedestrian Bridge today is used purely for public access and recreation and connecting the walking and bicycle path to the North and South sides of the Maribyrnong River.
