Historical information
These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, feature Emma Christopoulos and Herve Tran of Albion Primary School participating in the school's Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Read-a-thon.
Students were encouraged to read as many books as possible and obtained sponsorship on a per-book basis. Each participating child received a certificate and became eligible for a range of special prizes in recognition of their efforts and support for Multiple Sclerosis fundraising.
Significance
A primary school Read‑a‑thon is far more than a fundraising activity, it’s one of the most effective literacy promotion tools schools can run. Its importance comes from how it blends reading motivation, habit‑building, community engagement, and measurable literacy gains in a way few other programs can match.
