Willis Street Kindergarten emerged during the rapid expansion of St Albans in the post‑war decades, when migrant families were settling across the suburb and demand for early childhood services increased sharply.

Its small scale and neighbourhood location made it deeply valued by families who preferred local, familiar settings over larger institutional centres.

In 2000, the Willis Street Kindergarten was at risk of closure or consolidation by the City of Brimbank.

Community concern was reported at the time, and parents advocated strongly for it to remain open. Instead, it underwent upgrades and continued operating into the 2000s, supported by local families who valued its location and community‑based model.

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, were part of the campaign led by parents whose children attended the kindergarten at the time.
