Historical information

Red Nose Day traces back to Victoria in 1977, when Kaarene Fitzgerald founded the state’s Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) organisation after the sudden death of her baby son, Glenn.

This Victorian foundation became one of several state‑based groups formed by bereaved parents seeking answers, support, and research funding.

The first national Red Nose Day was held in 1988.

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1992, show Rosamond Kindergarten participating in the national Red Nose Day campaign.
