Stan Cash has one of the most colourful and unusual retail histories in Melbourne — rising from a “tin shed cowboy” discount chain in the 1970s–90s, collapsing, then being revived in the 2010s and finally being acquired by the BSR Group in 2021.

Stan Cash became an iconic Melbourne discount retailer between the 1970s and 1990s, known for cut‑price electrical appliances, factory seconds, bedding and homewares, loud, humorous advertising and cowboy branding.

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, were published after the St Albans Stan Cash store closed its doors following ten years of operation.

Stan Cash was the largest electrical appliance retailer to trade in the St Albans area, and its closure marked a significant moment in the local commercial landscape.

Significance

During the 1980's, St Albans saw the closure of several major retailers—including Fosseys, Treasureway, St Albans Builders & Hardware Supplies, Coles News World, Stevens’ Big Store, and now Stan Cash, each marking a significant moment in the suburb’s commercial landscape. These departures also meant that local residents increasingly needed to travel to larger shopping centres to make their purchases.
