Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, capture the construction of the Westlink Bridge on Somerville Road as it crossed Kororoit Creek to link Brooklyn with Sunshine West.

They show the moment when the major bridge spans were lifted into place, marking a key stage in the project’s development.

It was estimated that once completed, the bridge would carry between 30,000 and 35,000 vehicles per day, diverting much of the traffic away from Glengala Road and Little Boundary Road.
