Historical information
These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, feature a staff member in the gaming area of the Sunshine RSL celebrating the reopening of the club’s poker machine facilities following a nine-week closure.
The closure occurred after an administrative oversight resulted in the club failing to lodge its gaming licence renewal application on time. As a consequence, the club was unable to operate its gaming facilities and reportedly lost approximately $90,000 in revenue during the shutdown.
The uncertainty caused significant concern among staff, many of whom feared for their jobs while the licence issue was being resolved. Following the reopening of the gaming area, all employees retained their positions, making the event a welcome outcome for both the workforce and the club.
Significance
The photographs capture a moment of relief and optimism as staff returned to normal operations after a challenging period for the organisation.
