Historical information

John Kontek (1927–2020) was a long‑time Sunshine resident and the founder of John Kontek Real Estate, a business that grew to 22 branches across Victoria. He immigrated from Ukraine and established himself as a respected local businessman and community figure.

His business, John Kontek Real Estate Pty Ltd, was formally registered in 1991 and operated throughout suburbs including Albion, St. Albans, Sunshine, Sunshine North and Sunshine West.

Kontek operated his real estate headquarters at 233–241 Hampshire Road, Sunshine, a building known locally as Kontek House.

The Kontek family held this site for 63 years, making it one of Sunshine’s longest‑running private commercial holdings.

Significance

John Kontek was one of Sunshine’s most influential post‑war real estate figures.
