The girls are Elizabeth Lock and Nanette Hunt. The photograph was taken in the garden at the former Donaldson family home in Sussex Street, Linton. Unfortunately, the house is not shown - the view is across Sussex Street to a cottage on the other side of the road. Elizabeth Lock's aunt and uncle, Vera and James Johnson, bought the house from the Donaldson family in the mid 1930s. Elizabeth Lock, b.1934, often stayed for extended periods with her aunt and uncle and briefly attended school at Linton in 1941. Nanette Hunt, b.1931, was the daughter of William George Hunt, Postmaster at Linton in the 1930s.Black and white copy of original photograph which shows two small girls dressed in fairy or butterfly costumes. These coins were in use in Australia during the 20th century up to 1965. The coinage was based on the imperial system with the basic currency unit being the pound. In February 1966 decimal coinage was introduced in Australia with the basic currency unit being the dollar (equivalent in value to half a pound or ten shillings). This collection of coins shows what coins looked like in Australia before the introduction of decimal currency. It is a very useful display item. This is a collection of coins in a wooden box. The wood is polished and has brass hinges on the lid and a brass lock and keyhole on the box’s side. The lid is lined with blue felt and on the top of the lid is a much-scratched brass shield (intended for inscribing a name). Inside the box there is a clear piece of glass over the coins which are pasted onto a piece of buff-coloured paper. There are 40 coins in the box. The heading is hand written (calligraphy) in black ink and the other information is type-written. ‘Australian Pre-Decimal Coinage’ ‘Edward V11, Threepence & Sixpence, 1910’ ‘George V, Halfpenny, Penny, Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling, Florin, 1911-1936’ ‘George V1, Halfpenny, Penny, Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling, Florin, 1938-1952’ ‘Elizabeth 11, Halfpenny, Penny, Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling, Florin. 1963-1963’ decimal currency in australia, pre-decimal currency in australia, history of warrnambool

Book with blue cover titled -"Daisy" by Elizabeth Wetherell. books

In late 1883 the Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh township and nearby districts. They are known to have been visiting the town in September 1883 and by November 1883 they were reported to have moved on to Myrniong and Ballan. During their visit they took numerous photographs. The images produced comprise scenes of shops and businesses in Bacchus Marsh, public buildings like the Court House and Bacchus Marsh Primary School, houses and their owners and several broader views of streets. The photos were then offered for sale. Photography businesses also sold albums for purchasers to display their photos.A unique and comprehensive set of images of people and places in the Bacchus Marsh town and district at a particular period in time, September-November 1883. This album of "carte de visites" photographs presents a rare compilation of the work of the Stevenson and McNicoll photography business. This team of photographers are known to have made several visits to towns and districts in the rural areas of Victoria and southern New South Wales in the 1880s and this album represents a very rare example of their non-portrait photography. The album is an example of the Victorian middle-class fashion to display family photographs for themselves and their visitors. These albums were often very expensive and in themselves evidence of the affluence of the family. They were made possible by the popularisation of photography as a social medium and were a forerunner of the coffee-table book. Medium sized leather-bound album, brown, front cover engraved with gold tooling in a starburst pattern. Pages are gold-lined. The inside front and end covers are in pale blue silk embossed with a gold floral pattern. The metal locking clasp is broken. The front page has a floral wreath of roses and forget-me-nots and a dragon-fly. The word "Album" is in the centre of the wreath, printed in gold in Gothic print. There are nine pages with pockets for four 65mm x 105mm sized "carte de visites" style photographs. Several feature pages have a single pocket for a larger photograph, or double pockets, possibly designed for family portraits. These portrait pages are also decorated with floral wreaths and insects, reflecting the theme of the frontispiece page. The smaller photos in the album were taken by the Melbourne photographers Stevenson and McNicoll, There are 48 of these smaller images. The images were created around September 1883 when photographers for Stevenson and McNicoll are known to have visited Bacchus Marsh and district. The images comprise scenes of shops and businesses in Bacchus Marsh, public buildings like the Court House and Bacchus Marsh Primary School, houses with their owners and several broader views of streets. References to various photos being created and being available for sale are mentioned in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper during September to November 1883. Each smaller photo has printed on the verso: Light & Truth. Published: The Age, 3 October 1934 Published title: CENTENARY GIFT PORTRAIT. Published caption: A reproduction of the attractive portrait of Lady Melbourne, the mother of Lord Melbourne, which has been presented to the City of Melbourne, and will hang in the Lady Mayoress’s room at the Town Hall. Trove article identifier: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/205879945 Description: A framed mezzotint portrait of a young woman gazing towards her right, with her right arm resting on a table. She is wearing an 18th century style dress and jacket trimmed with ermine tails. A string of pearls is entwined in her upswept hair and through a long lock of hair falling over her shoulder then draping across her bodice. The portrait rests on a cane bottomed chair and a pencil holds it in place. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: In 1934, Mr Roger Dolbey of London donated to the City of Melbourne a mezzotint engraving of Lady Melbourne, mother of the British Prime Minister after whom the Victorian capital city of Melbourne was named in 1837. The engraving was created in 1771 by John Finlayson after Sir Joshua Reynolds. The gift commemorates the centenary of Melbourne. Elizabeth Milbank, Viscountess Melbourne, 1751-1818 was the wife of wealthy Whig politician, Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne. Lady Melbourne was an ambitious political hostess of the Regency period who cultivated beneficial relationships for her husband’s career. She was beautiful and vibrant and men found her easy going, good humoured company. She had many lovers and it is believed that of her nine children, (three of which did not survive childhood) only her first born, Peniston was fathered by her husband. One of her lovers was George, Prince of Wales, later George IV, believed to be the father of her fourth son George and who was his godfather. Lady Melbourne’s second son William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, 1779-1848, was British Prime Minister and a close political confidant and father figure to the young Queen Victoria in the early years of her reign. In 1812, his wife Lady Caroline Lamb, 1785-1828, had a torrid and very public affair with poet Lord Bryon who she described as “Mad, bad and dangerous to know”. As a child, Caroline considered being able to wash a dog as one of her most satisfying accomplishments! The portrait hung in the Lady Mayoress’s room at Melbourne Town Hall.
