Antipodean Elthams and how I got there, a talk by Margaret Taylor for the Eltham Society, England, November 1st 2001. 2nd draft with hand written notes/ addtions/corrections in the hand of Harry Gilham and others. The talk focuses on the history of the friendships between the Eltham Society in the UK with EDHS and the Eltham & Districts Historical Society Inc (NZ). Margaret's visit in 1997 and 1998, including her personal experience with discussion on the local history. This is a photocopy with the original copy with notes likely returned to Margaret. 31 Pages. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. A truck operated by G.W. Glenn Road Transport Pty Ltd of Moama, NSW was transporting a load of sleepers and wood posts along Henley Road, Kangaroo Ground. As a result of signioficantly wet conditions, the truck became disabled when the trailer slipped off the verge of the unsealed muddy road whilst negotiating a hairpin bend. This magazine has been collected for the article on page 2, "Pioneers and Painters" about the book published by the Shire of Eltham in celebration of its centenary, edited by Alan Marshall with a photo of Alan Marshall with the book. The article provides some background to Marshall's association with Eltham and Kangaroo Ground and includes notable mentions of Peter Glass, Cecile Glass, Clifton Pugh, Jon Olsen, Justus Jorgensen, Matcham Skipper, Montsalvat and Mudbrick houses. "The Australian Women's Weekly" has been digitised and is accessible via the National Library of Australia's Trove website. Digitised editions cover the period from its first issue in 1933 to 1982 only. The magazine published by Australian Consolidated Press out of Sydney, NSW was a national magazine and at times different issues were published for specific states. This particular issue is one such an example in that the August 4, 1971 edition available via Trove (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/4888729) has a different front cover and the Alan Marshall article on page 2 does not exist. The Paddle Steamer Etona was named after Eton College in England. In its earlier days it served as an Anglican Mission boat closer to the mouth of the Murray River. It ended up being bought by two Echuca businessmen, Ian Stewart, a solicitor, and Phil Symons, a chemist. They spent a couple of weeks steaming it up from Goolwa to Echuca where they placed it on the slipway to undertake restoration work. Ian Stewart's Holden is seen alongside the boat. The Moama Slipway was located on the NSW side of the river directly opposite Evans Bros. Sawmill. The boats would be pulled up the slipway on cradles (visible under the boat) by the steam winch seen in the foreground. George Coop had a minor role in assisting with the restoration of the Etona. New redgum planks were bolted to her underside and these were sealed (or caulked) by Phil Symons and Ian Stewart by ramming bitumen soaked rope into the gaps. A special plant track repair and goods recovery train proceeding to a cattle train derailment on the Balranald (NSW) line from which sheep had also escaped. The train composition was made up of J-Class steam locomtive J-502, a water gin carrying extra water for the train given doubtful supplies en-route, a wagon to reload the surviving sheep, a wagon containing track tools and equipment, a carriage for the work crew, a bogie wagon containing all the specialist tools for re-railing the train, followed lastly by the Guard's van. The specialist wagons and their equipment were based at the Bendigo Depot (see painted markings on van side) in a state of readiness for immediate use as the need arose The train is viewed approaching the Iron Bridge grade out of the Echuca rail yard. The Gatekeepers hut is visible on the right. Charles Cockcroft born Bundanoon, NSW, 1885, died 1966 and Annie Cockcroft (nee Green) born Lismore, NSW, 1881, died 1943. They are buried together in Eltham Cemetery. On 28 Nov 1931 C.R. Nicholls offered for auction the General Store and attached house he had built on the corner of York Street and Main Road in late 1925. The property was purchased by Charles and Annie Cockcroft from which they lived and ran their grocery business. Following the death of Annie in 1943, and prior to 1949, Charles sold the business and moved farming at Jeeralang North near Traralgon in Gippsland. Charles Cockcroft born Bundanoon, NSW, 1885, died 1966 and buried in Eltham Cemetery. At one time Charles had a depot in Kangaroo Ground. Piers Bateman (1947 – 2015) was an Australian landscape painter. He was a member of The Antipodeans, a group of Melbourne painters that also included Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, Charles Blackman, John Brack, Robert Dickerson, John Perceval and Clifton Pugh. In March 2010 he was appointed Artist in Residence as an Honoray Professor for painting at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art under Fudan University in Shanghai, China.
