James McConnachie worked in the Emerald Co-Op from 1981 until his retirement in 2012. In that time he served as the Secretary Manager, General Manager and Managing Director. Founded in 1945, the Emerald and District Co-Operative Society was established in the wake of the Second World War when a shortage of stock feed created a desperate situation for local farmers. The co-operative movement is a workers movement that grew out of industrial Britain when underpaid working people banded together to buy goods at wholesale prices (Jenkinson, 2005).This photograph is historically and socially significant because it depicts a long-serving member of the Emerald Co-Operative. Since its establishment in 1945, the Co-Op has become an integral part of the community. It is an active supporter of local sporting clubs, schools and groups. Sponsorships have included the football club, the primary and secondary schools, and the Emerald RSL. The co-op movement is an historically significant movement that has ties with the broader social and labour movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.Black and white rectangular photograph. In 1944, due to shortages created by World War II. J.L. Hirst, R.W. Nobelius, H.R. Wardle, H. Wise and J. Eudey came together to form the first co-op in Emerald to evenly distribute provisions to help those in the community, which is still standing today. The Emerald Co-Op has huge historical and social significance for the town of Emerald as it changed the way the community worked by coming together to help the townsfolk for common benefit, that is still seen today. In 1944 Emerald like the rest of Australia was affected by the war and provisions for farmers were low, so the co-op was founded by several local members of the community as a way for the town of Emerald to come together to lend a hand to one another and share needed provisions, which has been seen throughout Australian history known as the "Australian Spirit."Black and white rectangular photograph showing the Emerald Co-op printed on matte photographic paper. The Emerald co-operative society was formed at a meeting at the Emerald Mechanics Institute on 9 December 1944, those present agreed that the solution to a shortage of stock feed caused by the privations of World War II was to form a co-operative society in Emerald. Jack Eudey was elected Chairman, Horrie Wardle was appointed Secretary, and Jack Hirst Manager. This record holds historic significance to Emerald as it shows the history of both the Emerald Co-operative society and the Lumeh guest house. There is strong research potential with this record due to the time period and location the shed was situated in and the unknown information of the shed pictured.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper. This black and white photograph depicts a tin shed on an unmade ground. This was the first co-op store at Lumeah which was a guest house within Emerald.
