In 1944, due to shortages created by World War II. J.L. Hirst, R.W. Nobelius, H.R. Wardle, H. Wise and J. Eudey came together to form the first co-op in Emerald to evenly distribute provisions to help those in the community, which is still standing today.The Emerald Co-Op has huge historical and social significance for the town of Emerald as it changed the way the community worked by coming together to help the townsfolk for common benefit, that is still seen today. James McConnachie worked in the Emerald Co-Op from 1981 until his retirement in 2012. In that time he served as the Secretary Manager, General Manager and Managing Director. Founded in 1945, the Emerald and District Co-Operative Society was established in the wake of the Second World War when a shortage of stock feed created a desperate situation for local farmers. The co-operative movement is a workers movement that grew out of industrial Britain when underpaid working people banded together to buy goods at wholesale prices (Jenkinson, 2005).This photograph is historically and socially significant because it depicts a long-serving member of the Emerald Co-Operative. Since its establishment in 1945, the Co-Op has become an integral part of the community. It is an active supporter of local sporting clubs, schools and groups. Sponsorships have included the football club, the primary and secondary schools, and the Emerald RSL. A history of the first sixty years of the Emerald and District Co-operative Society, written by Jo Jenkinson, Emerald Museum, at the invitation of Paul Frisk, Chairman of Directors. Based on new bulletins issued by the Co-op, minutes of Directors' meetings and AGMs, and personal memories of former employees of the Co-op. The Co-op was founded by farmers in the Emerald district in 1944-45, and had an important influence on farming and general development in the district in itsw early years. The Emerald co-operative society was formed at a meeting at the Emerald Mechanics Institute on 9 December 1944, those present agreed that the solution to a shortage of stock feed caused by the privations of World War II was to form a co-operative society in Emerald. Jack Eudey was elected Chairman, Horrie Wardle was appointed Secretary, and Jack Hirst Manager.This record holds historic significance to Emerald as it shows the history of both the Emerald Co-operative society and the Lumeh guest house. Dr. Peter C. Crawford has won awards for his contributions towards the Anglican church and community such as making it to the Queen’s Birthday 2020 honours list, Mr. Crawford received a Medal of the Order of Australia. Dr. Peter C. Crawford became the vicar at St Mark’s Church in Emerald and remained in that role for 34 years. Over his many years of service to the Anglican Church, Mr Crawford has been the priest in charge at Belgrave Heights, Selby, Monbulk and St Luke's in Cockatoo. In 1984, he co-founded ECHO Youth and Family Services – formerly Emerald Centre for Hope and Outreach – and was president there for 31 years.
