Booklet compiled by the Emerald Rural Fire Brigade 'in the interests of public safety' detailing fire prevention measures for domestic properties. Date unkown but would have been before construction of Cardinia Dam in the early 1970s and when Emerald Telephone Exchange was still in use. Advertisements contain useful historical information with names and phone numbers of various businesses in the town. The card is a list of phone numbers to ring in case of fire, with names and addresses of members of the brigade, local doctor (I. S. Vendors brochure for auction, Saturday 26 January 1960 (?), of 34 garden allotments. Includes locality plan. No year date on brochure. Describes rich mountain soil, beautiful flowering trees and shrubs, formed roads with access to every block. Electric light telephone etc. Carramar was built by Carl Axel Nobelius in 1898. It was later owned by Mrs Mirams and used as a nursing home. The garden had many rare and beautiful trees and shrubs used by Nobelius for propagation. C.A. The Emerald Waterboard Trust was very significant to Emerald and district involved in the delivery of potable water and some sewerage. Their office was situated next to the Emerald water tower in KIngs Road The interior of this office shows the type of machines used in offices during the 1980s and 1990s for communication, recording data, producing receipts and keeping rates records etc.Black-and-white photograph, rectangular in shape, printed on matte paper. This photograph shows what appears to be the interior of a business office. There are two males working in this room The man in the foreground is sitting in an office chair He has dark hair and is wearing glasses. He is wearing a dark coloured jumper and a light coloured shirt collar can be seen at his neck. He is looking at a Personal Computer and has his right hand on a keyboard infront of him, which has white keys. The second male is standing behind the seated man. He has dark hair and is wearing a dark coloured jumper with light coloured trousers. The jumper has a small, light coloured design on the left chest area. On the man's left wrist is a metal chain link bracelet which he is wearing over the sleeve of his jumper. This man is holding a landline telephone handpiece to his left ear. The telephone has a spiral cord. He is leaning forward and appears to be looking at the seated man's computer. Behind the seated man there is an office chair and desk. On the desk is a keyboard with white keys and a small computer, a fax machine and some paper. Next to an adjoining wall is a photocopier and a large poster on the wall above it. Behind the desk is a metal office cupboard. On a wall to the right of the seated man is a metal cupboard with a metal handle. The front of the cupboard appears to have several lights and monitors on it. Next to this cupboard is a photograph on the wall and below it is a filing cabinet. A small typewriter is visible on top of a plastic box next to the seated man. Daylight is coming through a high window and electric lighting is also seen in the room. A brief gold rush starting in 1858 led to the opening up of the Emerald district. While short lived (and not very successful,) the influx of people led to the early timber and farming industries that built the communities that now exist. The image on the postcard shows typical working conditions on more advanced operations, using significant diversions of creeks to provide water for sluicing while the creek bed below the diversion would be dried and exposed to allow workers to remove the material for processing in the hydraulic sluice. The correspondence on the postcard, whilst sometimes difficult to read, helps to paint a picture of life in the district, and how people communicated in this earlier period. The recipient of the postcard is a prominent member of the early Gembrook community, John Ure, who ran various businesses including a cheese factory in Silver Hills/North Gembrook. The lack of legible postage date opens up many mysteries about this item, as well as different references to the person in the sluice being "Tom Collins"The record shows strong significance, depicting working conditions and technology of early gold mining in the Emerald area. Even more-so, the personal/commercial correspondence depicts a customer ordering cheese from the local cheese factory, presumably before electric communication.Black and White rectangular postcard printed on laminated card stock, personal correspondence. This postcard depicts hydraulic sluicing in the Emerald area of Victoria. Two bearded workers, one wearing a hat, are posing in the mid ground. One is standing in the sluice itself and one standing above on the embankment with shovel in hand. Native forest surrounds the workings with roots exposed, while the sluice itself runs vertical through the frame, roughly cut into the ground.
