Hans Knorr was an abstract sculptor who lived in Emerald until 1979. This Art Gallery was the first privately owned rural art gallery in Victoria. Hans became a pre-eminent sculptor of his generation, working in aluminium, bronze, steel, glass and wood. Much of his work was commissioned for churches and cathedrals in Australia and overseas. Pieces of his work can be found in every state of Australia, USA, Hong Kong, France, England and many other countries. This sketch of the gallery was done as part of the publicity of the launch of the book, 'The Hills of Home: A Bicentennial History of the Sherbrooke Shire', in 1988. As well as doing this particular sketch, Jillienne Winzenried's pen and ink drawings feature throughout this book. Hilde Knorr (1917 – 2009) Descended from English and Scottish pioneers of the Latrobe Valley, Hilde Knörr grew up in the Moe-Warragul district, then studied music in Melbourne. She married the Bavarian-born sculptor, Hans Knörr, and began writing articles and short stories when her children were small. She published novels, short fiction, biography and poetry. She also published the non-fiction works Religious Art in Australia (1967) and Merriang: An Early Victorian Homestead (1981), a property at Myrtleford, Victoria, where Knörr had resided. Note that Goonawarra is misspelt on the label.Green glass bottle used for 1975 claret and bottled for the first Sunbury Fair. The label is printed in brown and cream and features a sketch of the Goonawarra Winery and surrounding area. There is a brief statement on the back about the winery and the background to production of the wine. On the back is a hand-written label, stuck on with clear tape giving an account of the origin of the bottle of wine, its donor and storage instructions. It has a black metal cap and miscellaneous markings on the flat bottom."Sunbury Fair / Goonawarra Vineyard (above) was established / in Sunbury in 1858 by the / Hon. J. G. Francis, former Premier of Victoria. / This 1975 Claret from the Stanley Wine Co. / was bottled by Emerald Wines especially / for the Sunbury Fair / WINE PRODUCED IN AUSTRALIA F100 750ml". As a German national he was interned for the remainder of the war but obtained permanent residence in 1946. He restored antiques while establishing his name as a sculptor. In 1948 he held his first exhibition and by the late 1950s was receiving commissions. In 1949 the Knorr family moved to Monbulk Road, Emerald, where Hans Knorr opened his sculpture gallery in 1961. He died in 1988.
