Historical information

Hans Knorr was born in Bamberg, Germany, in 1915. He left Germany in 1934, reaching Australia via South Africa during World War Two. As a German national he was interned for the remainder of the war but obtained permanent residence in 1946. He restored antiques while establishing his name as a sculptor. In 1948 he held his first exhibition and by the late 1950s was receiving commissions. In 1949 the Knorr family moved to Monbulk Road, Emerald, where Hans Knorr opened his sculpture gallery in 1961. He died in 1988.
This sculpture was donated to Emerald Museum by Hans Knorr's widow, Hilde, a prominent author.
