View at Emerald...Emerald...This could also be taken from one of the curves in then railway to the east of Emerald, though the roads it could be taken from were historically limited....Obverse, Caption: "VIEW AT EMERALD"...Emerald, Victoria, Australia...Emerald Obverse, Caption: "VIEW AT EMERALD" This item is a modern copy of an older black and white photograph. ...It's difficult to tell exactly when this photograph was taken, besides that it was when the line which is now Puffing Billy was in operation - that is, between 1900 and 1954. Location-wise, given the proximity to the railway it was likely taken from Belgrave-Gembrook Road to the west of Emerald, looking towards the town, though it is unclear exactly where this could have happened. This could also be taken from one of the curves in then railway to the east of Emerald, though the roads it could be taken from were historically limited. This photograph shows an earlier view of Emerald and its surroundings, mostly lacking the development that has effected the land over the past centuries. This item is a modern copy of an older black and white photograph. It is relatively blurry and pixelated, indicating it may have been expanded from a smaller photograph. It depicts an unpaved road; the photographer is standing to the right of the road, looking down it as it approaches from behind the photographer, appears in the bottom-left, ascends a hill and disappears into the top-right of the photograph. Past the road is a landscape mostly of shrubs, bushes, and sparse trees, interrupted by an unclear train with several carriages following the line left, steam emitting from its chimney.. Alongside the road runs what looks like a telegraph line, though depending when this was taken it could carry electricity.Obverse, Caption: "VIEW AT EMERALD"emerald -

The station stayed open until 1954, but judging by context such as the clothing of the people on the platform, this image was likely taken earlier. While it's possible this is a crowd gathered for the opening of the station, it is difficulty to prove either way and could also just be a crowd of passengers for the normal operation of the line. This image captures a vital element of Emerald's historical development - the railway. This item is a modern coy of an older black and white photograph. The photo captures a steam train entering a railway station from the left of the frame, greeted by a crowd of people standing on the station platform to the right. The train is partially obscured by a shed on the photographer's side of the tracks, likely with implements for train maintenance. Several other buildings are visible behind the station, with trees further in the distance.Obverse, Caption: "Railway Station, Emerald"railway, emerald -

They established 'spot mills' - smaller or temporary mills establish on the location of timber harvesting - around the local area, including at least this one and one in Macclesfield - though it is possible the caption is wrong and this IS the mill in Macclesfield. There are at least two other copies of this photograph in our collection. This image depicts a notable local business from the early 20th century, owned by a significant local family. This item is a modern printed copy of a black and white photograph. It depicts an open-walled wooden structure, with a closed roof held up by posts. Behind the main structure is a smaller structure covering a machine with steam flowing out of its chimney - a mechanical component of the mill, making the work of processing timber easier. To the left of the image, several unprocessed logs sit on the ground, while to the right is a pile of processed, cut, timber. Several workers - may five - are in frame, all standing near or under the wooden structure. In the background, dense trees rise above the structure, rising high enough to leave the frame. Hans Knorr was an abstract sculptor who lived in Emerald until 1979. This Art Gallery was the first privately owned rural art gallery in Victoria. Hans became a pre-eminent sculptor of his generation, working in aluminium, bronze, steel, glass and wood. Much of his work was commissioned for churches and cathedrals in Australia and overseas. Pieces of his work can be found in every state of Australia, USA, Hong Kong, France, England and many other countries. The Emerald Church of Christ operated from 1913 until 1964 on the site (and building) now part of Fernlea Community House. The old post office was on that location from the 1910s until after the Church stopped operating, although by the 1960s there were telephone booths in front of the post office. This image could date from 1913 until the 1950s, although it is likely toward the later end of that range in the 1940s or 50s. This copy was produced in 2006 from the original. This photograph captures two long-standing Emerald institutions from the first half of the 20th century, one of which is no longer in operation and the other which has moved and had its place replaced with an unrecognisable new structure. This black and white photograph is printed on glossy modern photo paper. Its lower margin is occupied by printed text explaining the publisher and the subject matter. The photograph itself centres on two buildings, each constructed from wooden planks with sloped, likely tin rooves. A power pole stands to the right in front of the rightmost building. The ege of a road is visible in the foreground, indicating that this picture was taken from on or across the road. The reverse has printed technical information about the photograph, typical of a digital printed photograph.Obverse: Left, Typed: "Published by P. & O. If the latter, it is likely this photograph was taken on the same day while the Rose photographer was in town; however, the former is also entirely possible. Regardless, it is likely this photograph is from the 1920s, if not exactly from Jan 5th 1923. The numbers assigned to the photographs are unhelpful for dating them as the Rose company tended to reuse numbers multiple times, and after a while were no longer photographing in numerical order. However, the sepia colour and medium rose is a good indication this is from around the 1920s. It is taken from Emerald Main Street/Belgrave-Gembrook Road, looking towards Pinnocks Road - it is unclear from exactly where on the road it was taken, but it could be looking down over what is now Madigan Way.This photograph records the landscape around Emerald at the start of the 20th century. This item is a sepia postcard. The reverse features a (medium) rose dividing the centre, with printed proprietary text and a small block of handwritten annotation in blue pen. A sale price is marked in pencil, as is an accession number. The obverse has a caption below the image; the image is taken from the top of a hill, looking over a road to rolling hills fading into the background. The first hill on the left has a nursery, growing a range of trees; the other hills are mostly fields with scattered trees.Obverse: Lower left: "THE ROSE SERIES, P. 317" Lower centre: "THE VIEW FROM THE TOWNSHIP OF EMERALD, VICTORIA" Reverse: Handwritten annotation, pen: "Looking from Main Rd. / towards Pinnocks Rd. / Nursery in 1920's" Handwritten, pencil, stamp square: "$6" Left: "PUBLISHED BY THE ROSE STEREOGRAPHS / Armadale, Victoria" Upper Centre: "REAL PHOTO POST CARD / THE "ROSE" SERIES DE LUXE PRODUCED IN AUSTRALIA"1920s, emerald, rose series -
