It's difficult to tell exactly when this photograph was taken, besides that it was when the line which is now Puffing Billy was in operation - that is, between 1900 and 1954. Location-wise, given the proximity to the railway it was likely taken from Belgrave-Gembrook Road to the west of Emerald, looking towards the town, though it is unclear exactly where this could have happened. This could also be taken from one of the curves in then railway to the east of Emerald, though the roads it could be taken from were historically limited.This photograph shows an earlier view of Emerald and its surroundings, mostly lacking the development that has effected the land over the past centuries.This item is a modern copy of an older black and white photograph. It is relatively blurry and pixelated, indicating it may have been expanded from a smaller photograph. There are seven other copies of this photograph in our collection, mostly differing in the placement of the label and the cropping of the photograph. This is itself a copy of the original. One of these copies is also accessioned as VEMUP0456.2. This c. 1907 photograph was taken from the intersection of Beaconsfield Road (now Kilvington Drive) and Station Road (now Puffing Billy Place), looking towards Emerald Railway Station. It looks past the Emerald Coffee Palace, a significant establishment serving coffee, wine, and more - a room in the back was even used as a visiting doctor's surgery. The Coffee Palace was, at the time, owned by the O'Connor family and run by Mrs Greatorex. At this time it was relatively new - the second centre of Emerald, around Kilvington Drive, mostly materialised thanks to the location of the railway station. The location of the railway is visible, but from this angle the station and tracks are not visible. Note the posts in front of the Palace - used to tie horses in this time before cars became dominant. There are elevated wires visible running along the left side of the street, which resemble power lines but at this time are more likely to have instead been telegraph cables. This copy was framed in the donor's home after being gifted to him by its previous owner, who bought it from an op-shop in Melbourne.This photograph recounts the growth of Emerald's second town centre around the railway station.This item is a large, slightly yellowed, black and white copy of an older photograph. Emerald Railway Station opened in 1900 with the line that would eventually become Puffing Billy. The station stayed open until 1954, but judging by context such as the clothing of the people on the platform, this image was likely taken earlier. While it's possible this is a crowd gathered for the opening of the station, it is difficulty to prove either way and could also just be a crowd of passengers for the normal operation of the line.This image captures a vital element of Emerald's historical development - the railway.This item is a modern coy of an older black and white photograph. Notes associated with this photograph indicate both that it was taken at the end of Heroes Avenue and that it was taken on 'Monbulk Road' - while these notes might simply be incorrect, it may also indicate that this may have been taken at what is now the intersection of Heroes Avenue and either Beaconsfield-Emerald Road or Kilvington Drive, potentially at the time under a different or incorrect name. The building in the foreground of the image is likely Robert Couper's - Emerald's first butchery which was established in approximately 1900 and later owned by the Madigan family. It was located near the corner of what are now Main Street and Monbulk Road, near today's Madigan Way. If the butchery in the photograph - which was likely taken in the first decade of the twentieth century - is indeed Couper's, this photo is likely looking down Main Street from the intersection with Monbulk Road. This photograph depicts a sawmill in Emerald operated by the Legg family - most likely by James Henry Legg (1860-1940) and his son Percy (1893-1968), who operated the mill business. They established 'spot mills' - smaller or temporary mills establish on the location of timber harvesting - around the local area, including at least this one and one in Macclesfield - though it is possible the caption is wrong and this IS the mill in Macclesfield. There are at least two other copies of this photograph in our collection.This image depicts a notable local business from the early 20th century, owned by a significant local family.This item is a modern printed copy of a black and white photograph. It depicts an open-walled wooden structure, with a closed roof held up by posts. Behind the main structure is a smaller structure covering a machine with steam flowing out of its chimney - a mechanical component of the mill, making the work of processing timber easier. "P. & O. Cowper" does not appear in internet research as a known publishing company; it is possible either that none of their work has made its way online, or that they were locals publishing on a small scale capacity. If the latter is true, "P. Cowper" could have been Mr. P. Cowper who participated in forming the Emerald Co-operative Society in 1945. The Emerald Church of Christ operated from 1913 until 1964 on the site (and building) now part of Fernlea Community House. The old post office was on that location from the 1910s until after the Church stopped operating, although by the 1960s there were telephone booths in front of the post office. This image could date from 1913 until the 1950s, although it is likely toward the later end of that range in the 1940s or 50s. This copy was produced in 2006 from the original.This photograph captures two long-standing Emerald institutions from the first half of the 20th century, one of which is no longer in operation and the other which has moved and had its place replaced with an unrecognisable new structure.This black and white photograph is printed on glossy modern photo paper. Several other Rose Stereograph Company postcards of Emerald - including P319 - are listed under VEMUP1031 and were dated Jan 5th 1923, which may have been either a date of purchase or the date the photographs were all taken. If the latter, it is likely this photograph was taken on the same day while the Rose photographer was in town; however, the former is also entirely possible. Regardless, it is likely this photograph is from the 1920s, if not exactly from Jan 5th 1923. The numbers assigned to the photographs are unhelpful for dating them as the Rose company tended to reuse numbers multiple times, and after a while were no longer photographing in numerical order. However, the sepia colour and medium rose is a good indication this is from around the 1920s. It is taken from Emerald Main Street/Belgrave-Gembrook Road, looking towards Pinnocks Road - it is unclear from exactly where on the road it was taken, but it could be looking down over what is now Madigan Way.This photograph records the landscape around Emerald at the start of the 20th century.This item is a sepia postcard. The Emerald Country Club was originally set up as a country retreat for the wealthy in the late 1920s. It was modelled on American country clubs and it was situated on land formerly owned by the Gembrook Nurseries. It offered accommodation and dining, a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, a bowling green as well as swimming and fishing facilities. By the 1970s the exclusive nature of the club had been relaxed and the golf course expanded. Its complex history since then is detailed in the typescript. The book was written to describe the 21 year history of Emerald U3A from its inception in 1992 until 2013. The third age refers to mature age people, homemakers of retirees aged 55 years and over.
