A Ditty Bag (or box) was originally called “ditto bag” because it contained at least two of everything, two needles, two spools of thread, two buttons, etc. With the passing of years, the “ditto” was dropped in favour of "ditty" and remains so today. Before World War I, the Navy issued ditty boxes made of wood and styled after footlockers. These carried the personal gear and some clothes of the sailor. Today, the ditty bag is still issued to recruits and contains a sewing kit, toiletry articles and personal items such as writing paper and pens. Another source says a Ditty Box or Ditty Bag is possibly from the Saxon word “dite”, meaning tidy or from the English word “dittis”, a type of canvas material. A small box or bag in which a sailor kept his valuables such as letters, small souvenirs and sewing supplies. An item that is socially significant as it gives insight into a sailors life aboard ship and is another part of marine history. Items such as these although they were regarded at the time as everyday objects help us now to map various aspects of marine archaeology thorough the ages.Sailors Ditty Bag, canvas bag for holding all the sail making and roping tools, with tie and brass clasp. Charles Kingsley: His Letters and Memories of His Life Vol 1 Author: Charles Kingsley Edited by his wife ( Frances "Fanny" Grenfell) Publisher: C Kegan Paul & Co Date: 1879 Further Information: Sixth Abridged Editionnon-fictionThe focus of this book is not a standard biography written by an outside observer; it is a life story told through letters and personal journals. The volume is seamlessly woven together with editorial commentary by Kingsley’s widow, Frances "Fanny" Grenfell. Because this is Volume 1, it covers the first half of Charles Kingsley's life. It documents his childhood, his time at Cambridge University, and his intense courtship of Fanny. His early career as an Anglican clergyman in the rural parish of Eversley is covered, alongside his rise to national prominence in the late 1840s and 1850s as a social reformer. The text highlights his role in the Christian Socialist movement and his writing under the pen name "Parson Lot" to advocate for the working class. It also explores the writing and reception of his famous early novels, such as Alton Locke and Yeast, which tackled themes of poverty and systemic inequality.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, charles kingsley: his letters and memories of his life vol 1, frances "fanny" grenfell, mrs kingsley

This bottle is sometimes referred to as a black glass 'Gallon' bottle. It is used for storing and transporting liquor such as port or madeira. Glass bottles and glass jars are in many households around the world. The first glass bottles were produced in south-east Asia around 100 B.C. and the Roman Empire around 1 AD. America's glass bottle and glass jar industry were born in the early 1600s when settlers in Jamestown built the first glass-melting furnace. The invention of the automatic glass bottle blowing machine in 1880 industrialized the process of making bottles. In 2019, plans were made to re-introduce milk glass bottle deliveries to Auckland in early 2020. The earliest bottles or vessels were made by ancient man. Ingredients were melted to make glass and then clay forms were dipped into the molten liquid. When the glass cooled off, the clay was chipped out of the inside leaving just the hollow glass vessel. This glass was very thin as the fire was not as hot as modern-day furnaces. The blowpipe was invented around 1 B.C. This allowed molten glass to be gathered at the end of the blowpipe and blown into the other end to create a hollow vessel. Eventually, the use of moulding was introduced, followed by the invention of the semi-automatic machine called the Press and Blow. In 1904 Michael Owens invented the automatic bottle machine. Before this time most glass bottles in England were hand blown. This is one of four bottles in Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum collection that were recovered by a local diver from the quarantine area just inside the Port Phillip Heads. Ships were required to pull into this area to check for diseases and other medical issues before they could head up to Melbourne. Quite often they would drink and throw the bottles overboard. Handmade glass bottle, manufactured in the 1850s. The bottle gives a snapshot into history and a social life that occurred during the early days of Melbourne's development and the sea trade that visited the port in those days. Bottle, glass, solid dark purple (black), round, matt surface. Glass ring below mouth, neck is slightly bulbous, body tapers slightly inward from shoulder to base. Base is concave with pontil mark. Green cloth hardcover with Authors name to front cover in gold. Spine has gold title lettering. The spine has a Library label.fictionCharles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era, famous for vivid characters, social criticism, and stories that were first published in serial form. He began as a journalist, rose to enormous popularity during his lifetime, and wrote major works such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations. Little Dorrit is about Amy “Little” Dorrit, a gentle, selfless woman born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors’ prison where her father, William Dorrit, has been imprisoned for unpaid debts. The story follows her as she works as a seamstress outside the prison, gradually becoming entangled with Arthur Clennam, a businessman returning from abroad. Dickens interweaves a sharp critique of Victorian bureaucracy, finance, and class throughout the story. The theme centres around Amy Dorrit who lives her whole early life in Marshalsea, supporting her family with quiet dignity while her father clings to fragile genteel pretensions. Arthur Clennam, disillusioned after years in China, becomes involved with the Dorrits and uncovers a web of secrets involving his own mother, a hidden inheritance, and shady business dealings. William Dorrit suddenly inherits a fortune and is able to lift the family out of poverty and into fashion conscious society. The novel shows how money distorts their characters and relationships, while Amy remains the moral centre. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, little dorrit, charles dickens

Green cloth hardcover with a black spine with authors name signed on front cover, lettering in gold. The spine has a Library label. First Published as part of the weekly Master Humphrey's Clock series (1840-1841)fictionCharles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era, famous for vivid characters, social criticism, and stories that were first published in serial form. He began as a journalist, rose to enormous popularity during his lifetime, and wrote major works such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations. Barnaby Rudge is a historical Dickens novel set against the Gordon Riots of 1780, mixing mystery, political unrest, family secrets, and the story of a simple minded young man, Barnaby, and his pet raven Grip. It is considered Dickens’s first historical novel and one of his less widely read works, but it remains important for its treatment of mob violence and social disorder. The novel begins with a murder mystery linked to the Haredale and Rudge families, then broadens into the chaos of the anti Catholic Gordon Riots in London. Barnaby, an innocent and impressionable character, is drawn into the riotous crowd. Other threads involve love, family conflict, imprisonment, and eventual reckoning. Dickens uses the riot setting to show how crowd panic and prejudice can spread destructively through society.flagstaff hil, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, barnaby rudge, charles dickens

This is a story based on a real pioneering family's adventures near Wangaratta, in central Victoria. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection, a large group of books and records, some of which are rare and valuable. The collection was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, which was founded in 1853 and is named after Warrnambool's Public Librarian, Ralph Pattison. The publisher firm Longmans, Green & Co. was founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The story is based on a real family and is significant as a means of understanding the life of a young pioneering family in our state of Victoria. The book is important for its connection with the London publisher Longmans, Green & Co. The firm has been established for over two centuries and is renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance.A Saddle at Bontharambo Author: H J Samuel Publisher: Longmans, Green & Co Date: 1950 Further Information: Illustrations by Cordelle Samuel The blue hardcover book has an illustrated cover picturing a covered wagon, a woman and two children, and illustrations within the book. War to The Knife Author: Pen Name Rolf Boldrewood For (Thomas Alexander Browne) Publisher: Macmillan And Co Printer: Robert Clark Date: 1899 Blue cloth hardcover and spine with spine lettering in gilt. The spine has a Library label with inscription.fictionWar to the Knife; or, Tangata Maori is a late 19th-century historical romance novel written by the prominent Australian author Rolf Boldrewood (the pen name of Thomas Alexander Browne) and published by the historic house Macmillan & Co. in 1899. Unlike most of Boldrewood's work, which is rooted deeply in the Australian outback, War to the Knife shifts its setting to New Zealand during the Waikato War of the 1860s, which was part of the New Zealand Land Wars. The story follows Sir Roland Massinger, a cultured English squire who suffers a devastating heartbreak at home when the woman he loves, Hypatia Tollemache, rejects him to pursue a life dedicated to social reform. Distraught, Sir Roland leaves his ancestral estate and emigrates to New Zealand in search of adventure and a fresh start. Upon arriving, he finds himself caught squarely in the middle of the violent clash between the Pakeha (British colonial settlers) and the indigenous Maori tribes over the ownership of the Waitara land block. Written in a late-Victorian style that heavily blends high-stakes adventure with a romanticised "frontier" view, the book attempts to explore colonial identity and the cultural friction of the era. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, war to the knife, rolf bolderwood

This book was part of a large group of books referred to as the Pattison Collection, which belonged to the Warrnambool Public Library, part of the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute. About RALPH ERIC PATTISON and the ‘PATTISON COLLECTION’ The ‘Pattison Collection’ is a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, founded in Warrnambool in 1853. By 1886 the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute (WMI) had grown to have a Library, Museum and Fine Arts Gallery, with a collection of “… choice productions of art and valuable specimens in almost every branch and many wonderful national curiosities, are now to be seen there, including historic relics of the town and district.” It later included a School of Design. Although it was very well patronised, the WMI was led to ask the City Council to take it over in 1911 due to a lack of financial support. In 1935 Ralph Pattison was appointed as City Librarian to establish and organise the Warrnambool Public Library as it was then called. Ralph Eric Pattison was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1891. He married Maude Swan from Warrnambool in 1920 and they set up a home in Warrnambool. In 1935 when Pattison accepted the position as City Librarian for the Warrnambool City Council his huge challenge was to make a functional library within two rooms of the Mechanics’ Institute. He tirelessly cleaned, cleared and sorted a disarrayed collection of old books, jars of preserved specimens and other items reserved for exhibition in the city’s museum. He developed and updated the library with a wide variety of books for all tastes, including reference books for students; a difficult task to fulfil during the years following the Depression. He converted all of the lower areas of the building into a library, reference room and reading room for members and the public. The books were sorted and stored using a cataloguing and card index system that he had developed himself. He also prepared the upper floor of the building and established the Art Gallery and later the Museum, a place to exhibit the many old relics that had been stored for years for this purpose. One of the treasures he found was a beautiful ancient clock, which he repaired, restored and enjoyed using in his office during the years of his service there. Ralph Pattison was described as “a meticulous gentleman whose punctuality, floorless courtesy and distinctive neat dress were hallmarks of his character, and ‘his’ clock controlled his daily routine and his opening and closing of the library’s large heavy doors to the minute.” Pattison took leave from 1942 to 1945 to serve in the Royal Australian Navy, Volunteer Reserve as Lieutenant. A few years later he converted one of the Museum’s rooms into a Children’s Library, stocking it with suitable books for the younger generation. This was an instant success. In the 1950’s he had the honour of being appointed to the Victorian Library Board and received more inspiration from the monthly conferences in Melbourne. He was sadly retired in 1959 after over 23 years of service, due to the fact that he had gone over the working age of council officers. However, he continued to take a very keen interest in the continual development of the Library until his death in 1969. THE NEW WARRNAMBOOL LIBRARY When the WMI building was pulled down in 1963 a new civic building was erected on the site and the new Warrnambool Library, on behalf of the City Council, took over all the holdings of the WMI. At this time some of the items were separated and identified as the ‘Pattison Collection’, named after Pattison. Eventually, the components of the WMI were distributed from the Warrnambool Library to various places, including the Art Gallery, Historical Society and Flagstaff Hill. Later some were even distributed to other regional branches of Corangamite Regional Library and passed to and fro. It is difficult now to trace just where all of the items have ended up. The books at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village generally display stamps and markings from Pattison as well as a variety of other institutions including the Mechanics’ Institute itself. The Pattison Collection, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Collection is primarily significant in its totality, rather than for the individual objects it contains. Its contents are highly representative of the development of Mechanics' Institute libraries across Australia, particularly Victoria. A diversity of publications and themes has been amassed, and these provide clues to our understanding of the nature of and changes in the reading habits of Victorians from the 1850s to the middle of the 20th century. The collection also highlights the Warrnambool community’s commitment to the Mechanics’ Institute, reading, literacy and learning in the regions, and proves that access to knowledge was not impeded by distance. These items help to provide a more complete picture of our community’s ideals and aspirations. The Warrnambool Mechanics Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and the important role it played in the intellectual, cultural and social development of people throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance. Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Author: Ralph Waldo Emerson Publisher: George Routledge & Sons. ( R.N. 8159 and R.N. 8344)fictionCharles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era, famous for vivid characters, social criticism, and stories that were first published in serial form. The novel shows how money distorts their characters and relationships, while Amy remains the moral centre. flagstaff hil, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, little dorrit, charles dickens

Hard cover book, London a Pilgrimage Author: William Blanchard Jerrold Publisher: Grant & Co, 74-78 Turnmill St. London. EC. Date: 1872 Morocco Olive hardcover with a damaged spine, lettering in gold with a title in a surrounded with a decorative panel. non-fictionLondon A Pilgrimage (1872) is one of the most celebrated, visually striking, and socially important illustrated books of the 19th century; as such, the work is a highly desirable piece of publishing history. The book offers a comprehensive, episodic portrait of Victorian London at the height of the British Empire. The prominent French artist Gustave Doré and English journalist William Blanchard Jerrold shared a fascination with urban life, combining their talents to create one of the 19th century's greatest collaborative works. They spent days exploring the metropolis together to capture the stark dualities of the city. Rather than focusing solely on the grand landmarks of the wealthy, the book famously juxtaposes the "sunlight and shadows" of London life. When Jerrold suggested a massive, joint exploration of London in 1869, it brought together two perfect skill sets: Jerrold provided the investigative journalistic grit and intimate knowledge of London’s social strata, while Doré provided the haunting, cinematic visual poetry through his illustrations.flagstaff hil, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library

Red leather hardcover with title on front on paper with a dark red spine and lettering in gold. Dickens uses the riot setting to show how crowd panic and prejudice can spread destructively through society.book, the old curiosity shop, charles dickens, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, great ocean road
