These enveloped have been used by the A.N.Z. Bank as a convenient way of storing coins. The one containing threepences is pre-decimal currency (1966) and other (five cents) is post 1966. The envelopes would have been used in all ANZ banks. The ANZ Bank was formed in 1951 when the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank. The Bank of Australasia was established in Warrnambool in 1854 and in 1953 the Bank of Australasia and the Union Bank closed and the ANZ bank opened in Timor Street. Today a branch of the ANZ bank is in Liebig Street. These envelopes are of minor interest as examples of the currencies and banking procedures of yesteryear. These are two paper envelopes, glued at the ends, one for holding five cent coins and the other for threepenny coins. Official envelope from the City of Ballaarat used to welcome visitors to Ballarat for the XVIth Olympic Games events held in the city in 1956. This envelope contained event tickets and promotional material for visitors to Ballarat for the Olympic Games. This was the first time the Olympic Games had been held in Australia and the rowing and canoeing events were conducted on Lake Wendouree at Ballarat from November 23rd to December 1st 1956.

Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. This envelope was used to post a letter or other similar document from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria around November 1861 to a Mr James Henderson in Coldstream, Northumberland, England. The contents inside the envelope have been lost and the sender of the envelope is not known. Postal services in Bacchus Marsh can be traced back to at least 1847 when Henry James of Bacchus Marsh was appointed postmaster for Bacchus Marsh replacing the service previously conducted from Ballan. Henry James conducted this postal service from his residence. This service was still designated as the Ballan Post Office until September 1850 when its name was formally changed to the Bacchus Marsh Post Office. The envelope of 1861 addressed to Mr Henderson in England is therefore a fairly early documentary artifact from users of the Bacchus Marsh postal service. An envelope used for a letter in 1861. An address in Norththumberland, England is written on the front of the envelope. It also shows a postage stamp depicting Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The postage stamp is a sixpence stamp produced in the colony of Victoria in the 1850s and 1860s. This envelope has been used at the Warrnambool chemist shop of Harry Shilton to protect the films (snapshots) developed for a customer. Harry Shilton’s shop was at 119 Liebig Street. He took over the pharmacy business of Ralph Barnes in 1937 and Alan Anderson became his business partner in 1953. Mr Shilton retired from the business in 1960. This letter has been written from France in 1917 by Private Edwin Johnson Carter to his friend Mrs Maggie Craig. It gives details of events in his life at the time – in the trenches in World War One. Private Edwin Johnson was a farmer from Nullawarre who enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He was drowned when the mail boat R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Irish Sea in October 1918. Private Johnson was returning from a visit to Ireland while on leave. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. I am somewhat calm to it now but if I am spared to return I fear it shall be my nightmare.” He did not return but we have this letter to remind us of the horrors men such as Private Carter endured. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. The envelope has an image of an Australian Military Forces Y.M.C.A. logo, a Post Office stamp and a Censor stamp. The address is handwritten in pencil. Takeo Iwahashi was the founder of the Nippon Lighhouse for the Blind in Japan. He made an enormous contribution to the lives and progress of blind people around the world, and was a great friend of Helen Keller. The annual Takeo Iwahashi Award was founded in his memory and is awarded to a "worker for the blind whose contribution to work for the blind in the fields of education, training, rehabilitation, placement, prevention and cure of blindness, administration of services for the welfare of the blind or any other program related to the welfare of the blind has been outstanding." Hugh Jeffrey won this award in 1988. This intricate and delicate presentation envelope is made from a heavy guage paper/fabric blend. It features a small addition of origami on the front, as well as Japanese calligraphy and a gold and silver knotted ribbon holding it closed. Located in the collection of Eltham District Historical Society, this envelope contains four sepia prints ranging in dates from 1923 to 1956. The envelope is postmarked 24 Apr 1958 and on the reverse is noted "Accepted 30/4/58". On the face is witten in pencil "Try 18" being No. 18 Russell Crescent, Fitzroy North. Also noted in blue ink "Mother Louie (or Louise) Down - Sister Hilda". The wedding photo is unidentified except for the date 22 May 1956. It was taken by The Lock wood Studios. Other photos are described on their reverse sides as: "Olive McKay, Mr Pinkerton and self" "Uncle Donald and Aunt Florrie, July 1923" "Jessfield, May 12th, 1928" It is not known why they are held by EDHS or the significance/relationship of the people to the Eltham district. Mary nee Barrie Robinson (1907 –1999) writes c1980 about her father Charles Ernest Barrie of Darlingsford Melton (1871 – 1931) Extract copied from her handwritten story - My father was born in Ballarat in 1871. … commenced his working life with a team of bullocks and a chaffcutter in the St Arnaud district, a work the he became most success at and would continue in to the end of his life. He eventually became the owner of a chaff mill at Melton station with an access line to the railway. [1900] The Schutt & Barrie partnership ….Dad later became involved in a Chaff mill at West Footscray run by John Ralph Schutt who when he met Dad was a very sick man and had begged Dad to come into the business and help him. That began a very happy association, the business was put on its feet. An empty quarry across Geelong Road opposite the mill was purchased, the chaffcutters were set up in the quarry and that was the start of a very busy and prosperous period. A branch line was run into the mill. Dad spent some afternoons at the mill going by train, and spending some hours there at night, at the same time running the farm with full time help. Two full 8 horse teams were used to work the land, which meant early rising for the horses to be fed and harnessed ready for the men to commence the days work. Charlie Lowe and Murdock Davey were two of the men who worked for Dad in those years. The firm purchased a mill at Parwan and Dad spent a lot of time and energy getting it running to their satisfaction. Monday was the day he spent time there also round the district of Parwan and Balliang. He came to know many of the their names were well known in our household for many years. [1920] Later a flour mill was built beside the Chaff mill at West Footscray but it never thrived like the mill. The chaff mill had many loyal and good men employed there and there was never any trouble between men and management.
