This bags owner Mrs Edna Parker is a Wandin local with connections back to the original Rouget family of the Wandin Area. The original owner of the evening bag was Elizabeth (Betty) McGregor. The bag was a gift from her husband, Ian McGregor (Managing Director of Ingersoll Rand), during a trip to Europe. The bag was purchased in Burlington Arcade, London in 1955. An accompanying photograph shows Betty, in attendance at a Captain's cocktail party with the evening bag on her arm. Betty was the best friend of the my mother, and not having children of their own, Betty and Ian were very good to my sister and I. Betty gifted the bag to me in 1983. As a Kew resident, it gives me much pleasure to pass on this evening bag to the Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society. Clothing. Circular, on a gold metal frame, with a gold (badly tarnished) brass chain handle. A small beaded brass clasp closes the bag. Three small .5 cm pearls sit on top of the clasp, one in the centre of the beaded clasp, and two other groups of three pearls on top of the frame, with tiny white, pink and green beads - possibly silk brocade, has an all-over floral design in cream, pink, and dull green, on a cream background. The bag is lined with cream satin and has a small internal side pocket. The Fashion & Textiles collections of Kew Historical Society include a number of art or household textiles manufactured or created in the United Kingdom as well as in Australia. As other cultures opened to Australian travellers in the 20th century, members began collecting and donating textiles produced in a number of other countries. Evening bag constructed from two silk embroidered Chinese rank badges. Authentic badges would have been used on Imperial court costumes in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This handbag is a prime example of the popular style of the 1930s. The flamboyance of the art deco period is clearly seen in its geometrical beading. This bag was used in the 1970s by Mrs Annette Lord, and was part of a large collection she donated when helping found Mont de Lancey Historic Homestead. Annette and Neville travelled extensively throughout the 50s-70s during which Annette acquired a large amount of her collection. While partly for pleasure, Netta and Neville also travelled to strengthen diplomatic relationships in the British Crown, notably developing a unique relationship with Madagascan royalty and being one of the few families invited to Queen Elizabeth’s 1963 state reception. Much of Netta and Neville’s 1960s collection originated in Hong Kong, including this bag, a trend which can be attributed to both Netta and Neville’s extensive travel in Asia and Hong Kong’s 1960s industrial boom. The starburst design echoes that of Japanese beaded purses that came into vogue between the 1920s and 1960s as part of a fascination with the ‘oriental.’ Annette Lord’s collection is exemplary of this fascination, with this purse being one of many Japanese inspired items in her possession.C.1960s white and gold beaded evening bag with a starburst design. This dress and bag belonged to Mrs Edith "Dot" Paroissien (nee Jackson, born 1916), who lived in Brighton with her husband David William Paroissien. The dress was purchased from Croyde, a Melbourne designer who had a small boutique shop in Collins Street near the Block Arcade, and the bag was bought for her in London by David. Dot recalled wearing the dress in the 1950s, in particular to a ball at the Royal Exhibition Buildings for Wesley College. She wore it with suede shoes with a medium heel with straps across the instep and long white kid gloves, and accessorised with a baguette choker and drop earrings.Black silk satin sleeveless full-length evening dress.
