Letter from Western Mining Corporation to D.W. Cahill, Barrister, Bendigo dated 1st October, 1980, from J.H. Lalor, Exploration Manager, Minerals, WMC, regarding the objective of the Western Mining Corporation exploration program on the Bendigo goldfield. The major objective is to develop a long term mining operation 'which would be environmentally acceptable' It was considered that the value 'of such an operation to the local community and the Bendigo region would be substantial'. Gill Reef is a high-grade gold reef located within the Bendigo Goldfield, specifically on the Garden Gully line of reef. In the mid-2000s, Bendigo Mining planned to undertake trial mining and processing of ore from this reef to restart gold production in the region. While it showed promising indicators, the success of commercial production depended on the trial results and the economics of the time. Location: The Gill Reef is part of the broader Bendigo Goldfield and is located on the Garden Gully line of reef. Geology: It is a quartz reef with an estimated grade of 10–15 g/t gold. News reports from 2008 also describe it as a high-grade reef with promising signs of gold. Historical context: Bendigo Mining was preparing to trial mine and process ore from the Gill Reef around 2008 as part of a plan to restart gold production in the area. Three newspaper articles from one page of the 'Bendigo Advertiser' article, 17th March , 1995, titled ' Survey reveals gold in hills'. 1. The Minister for Energy and Minerals, JIm Plowman, discussed the results of the $16.5 million survey conducted in north-west Victoria and eastern highlands. Mr. Plowman maintained that the '$11 million exploration drive launched by Bendigo Mining to find gold in the Bendigo goldfield would succeed'. He was visiting Bendigo to officially open the refurbished Central Deborah Gold Mine. 2 .'Country mining search sparks local confusion' : Jim Plowman refutes the claim by Ron Best (National Party MLC) that Bendigo will play a 'key role in the multi-million dollar search for gold in country Victoria. 3. 'Miners form alliance": discusses a meeting by miners to form a body which will represent their interests. In 1917 Bendigo Amalgamated Goldfield Ltd was formed from the amalgamation of 35 companies with operations on the Garden Gully, Sheepshead, Deborah and Derby lines of reef hoping to increase profits of these existing operations through economies of scale. This was difficult to achieve as the shafts involved were spread throughout the goldfield. Diamond drilling and good geological practices were introduced (Pabst was Chief Geologist) leading to some exploration success. However costs were rising rapidly and in 1923 the directors, deciding that mining would soon become unprofitable, dissolved the company returning assets to the original vendors. J.H. Lenten, Mine Manager, received his second class Mine Manager's certificate in September, 1914 at an examination held at the Bendigo Law Courts. One hundred pages of fortnightly manager's reports for Bendigo Amalgamated Goldfields N.L., Sheepshead Shaft. Reports consist of two pages for each fortnight, signed by J.H. Lenten, Mine Manager. Dates of reports range from November 20th, 1917 to 5th May 1920. Sir Arvi Hiller Parbo: A.H. Parbo joined Western Mining Corporation in 1956 and over the next 12 years held the positions of Underground Surveyor, Underground Manager, Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, and Deputy General Superintendent. He was appointed General Manager in 1968 and became a Director in 1970. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director in 1971 and became Managing Director in the same year. In 1974, Parbo was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of Western Mining Corporation. Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC), incorporated on 2 March 1933, was active in minerals exploration and production in Australia and elsewhere until taken over by BHP Billiton in June 2005. A comprehensive history of the company has not been published, but there is a great deal of published and unpublished material recording various aspects of its activities.
