... ...Express Media...Express Media ‘s Artistic Director Richard Watts was the driving force behind the ground breaking initiative that was to become the Emerging Writers’ Festival. ...Express Media ‘s Artistic Director Richard Watts was the driving force behind the ground breaking initiative that was to become the Emerging Writers’ Festival. ...The first Emerging Writers’ Festival was held at the Victoria Hotel in Little Collins Street in January, 2004. The inaugural festival developed out of Express Media's Make It Up zine fair. It brought together the offerings of 68 writers from across Australia in a two-day series of panels, readings, performances and workshops. Express Media ‘s Artistic Director Richard Watts was the driving force behind the ground breaking initiative that was to become the Emerging Writers’ Festival. It was clear to him through the success and the demand of the Make It Up zine fair, which had its origins in 2000, that writing and writers were in the process of radical change and needed a new environment to grow. In response, Express Media formed a partnership with the Victorian Writers’ Centre and held the first Emerging Writers’ Festival with the tagline, the best Australian writers you haven’t heard of yet. The beginnings were humble but the foundations strong. In those early years the festival found its feet, its independence and a loyal and passionate audience. An eight page, stapled program for the 2004 Emerging Writers' Festival printed in black, white and three shades of orange."Featuring the best Australian writers / you haven't heard of (yet) including new, young and / emerging poets, zinesters, short story / writers, spoken word performers, novelists, / screenplay writers / and playwrights, and a range of panels, / readings, workshops as well as an / independent publishers' trade fair."2004 emerging writers' festival, richard watts, express media, literary programming, the wheeler centre, emerging writers', literary, festival, melbourne -

Some media reports refer to it generically as “The Melbourne – Adelaide Train", but the official service name "The Overland" remains unchanged. ...The Overland was a direct Melbourne to Adelaide interstate train, running as a daylight service (no sleeper carriages), operating twice weekly in each direction. The train departed Spencer Street Station (Southern Cross Station) to Adelaide on Mondays and Fridays and departed Adelaide Parklands Terminal to Melbourne on Thursdays and Sundays. There were two classes for passengers to choose from, the Red Standard Class with reclining seats and cafe access and the Red Premium Class with wider seats, extra legroom, dedicated dining carriage with meals included. The journey time was 10 1/2 to 12 hours. This train service is still operating and remains the only passenger rail link between the two cities. It is one of Australia’s oldest continuously named interstate trains (the name dates to 1926, with roots back to the Adelaide Express of the 1880s). Some media reports refer to it generically as “The Melbourne – Adelaide Train", but the official service name "The Overland" remains unchanged. This picture shows the S302 and another S class locomotive haul "The Overland" bound for Spencer Street, Melbourne, as it crosses the Kororoit Creek Bridge, west of Sunshine and was taken back in the days before the tracks were duplicated between Sunshine and Deer Park West, and well before the line between Melbourne and Adelaide was standardised, resulting in the diversion of interstate trains away from this section of line. The Overland was a popular slight for the local Albion, Ardeer, Deer Park, Sunshine & Sunshine West residents as it travelled along the Melbourne to Adelaide trainline, blowing its whistle at the various road and pedestrian crossings and spectators along the route.S302 VR S302overland train, forrest street, kororoit creek bridge, albion -

This image is significant because it provides insights into the equipment available at and layout of service stations at the time the photograph was taken, which is speculated to be the late 1980s or early 1990s. The image also provides insights into State Government election campaign tactics as it appears to show a media ...Museum records indicate that this image is believed to date from the 1990s. State Government elections were held in Victoria in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2002. The township of Emerald sits in the Monbulk State Government electorate, which was held by Labor in 1988 and the Liberal Party in 1992, 1996 and 2002. It is probable that the man in the centre of the group pictured in the photograph is Steve McArthur, the successful Liberal Party candidate and Member of Parliament for the Monbulk electorate in the 1992, 1996 and 2002 elections. The photograph appears to depict an event at which Mr McArthur visited local businesses, in this case the Shell Service Station, to canvass for votes during his election campaign. There is still a Shell Service Station in Emerald, located at 336-338 Belgrave-Gembrook Road, though it is now part of the Coles Express network. This image is significant because it provides insights into the equipment available at and layout of service stations at the time the photograph was taken, which is speculated to be the late 1980s or early 1990s. The image also provides insights into State Government election campaign tactics as it appears to show a media photo opportunity supporting a local Liberal Party candidate.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on print media paper. The image shows three men standing in front of a petrol bowser at a Shell Service Station. Two of the men are shaking hands, all are looking at the camera. One of the men is wearing a ribbon indicating that he is a Liberal party candidate; he and one other man are holding papers on which the words 'Liberal Victoria' is visible.
