The Sunshine and District Historical Society Pioneers’ Lunch / Dinner is an annual event. It’s a commemorative gathering that honours the early settlers, people, community leaders of Sunshine and the surrounding district. At the Pioneers’ Lunch / Dinner, a toast is a ritual and a dedicated moment to honour the original settlers and their contributions, and a guest speaker talks about an interesting subject. Charles Fahey taught history at La Trobe University until his retirement in 2018. He has written on the history of Victorian gold mining, Victorian agriculture and working in Melbourne. This document provides a detailed overview of Edward Isaac Dyason's life, based on his personal diary kept from 1858 to 1915. Dyason was born in Kent and emigrated to Australia in 1851.He settled in Bendigo and lived there for most of his life. Worked as a book-keeper and agent for George Lansell, a prominent figure in Bendigo's gold mining industry.Actively speculated in mining and served as a director for several mining companies, participating in major decisions regarding Bendigo's quartz mines. His diaries provide valuable insights into the business practices and dealings of the gold mining era. He Married Harriet Mason in 1880 after a long and uncertain engagement, largely due to financial concerns. He Became devoted to his wife and their four children after marriage. The Dyason family lived in Fortuna, George Lansell's mansion, until late 1887, after which they moved to a new home. The paper examines the origins and occupations of Bendigo's late nineteenth-century immigrants.It analyzes population fluctuations and migration patterns, especially out-migration during economic downturns. Marriage patterns, birth and death rates, illegitimacy rates, bridal pregnancies, and de facto relationships are also explored.Population Bendigo experienced significant population growth from 28,577 in 1871 to 35,584 in 1881, driven by a mining boom and economic prosperity. The late 1880s saw a decline in mining yields, leading to economic depression, unemployment, and a population decrease to 34,089 by 1891 as residents left the city. The city's development and demographic changes are closely tied to the fortunes of its mining industry, reflecting broader patterns of boom and bust in Australian provincial towns during this era. A large lot of papers, including this and other telegrams, were apparently found in the ceiling cavity of the Sandy Creek/Tarnagulla Post and Telegraph Office in the later 20th Century, during building works.
