A dickey is a type of false shirt-front that was originally intended to be worn with a tuxedo. Women made their own lace dickeys as a way to spice up their wardrobe. It was designed to be worn at the front, so that the lace decoration showed underneath another garment. This dickey is small and was worn by Marjorie Burton as a child. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. She came from a middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made most of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the handcraft skills of women in the early twentieth century.A small lace cream / white dickie. It is hand-made and double layered. The stole was worn for many years to family weddings and on a sea voyage in 1970. The Des Moines, Iowa-based company eventually stretched to Australia, Canada and South Africa. Chamberlains Colic and Diarrhea Remedy used alcohol, ether, and chloroform to soothe upset stomachs. The company also sold a cough remedy, liniment, pain relief balm and lotion. Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Remedy was one of many thousands of patent medicines that made incredible, and often false, claims about their effectiveness, and became tremendously profitable. Eventually government regulations were put in place to prevent medicine manufacturers from making unfounded claims about their products.This item is an example of a typical "over the counter" patented medicine commonly used by families. This has been proven false through photographic evidence but is believed to be somewhere within the Old Beechworth Gaol. The Old Beechworth Gaol opened in 1864 as a result of the gold rush boom that struck Beechworth in 1852, bringing with it a large population desperate for riches. It is most famously known for holding Australia's most famous outlaw, Ned Kelly, along with his relatives and supporters, the Kelly Gang. These renovations were first discussed by the Bendigo RSL in 1962 - 1963. This Document is headed, “Specifications of Workmanship and Materials required for Painting and Renovations etc, at R.S.S.A.I.L.A Hall, Pall Mall, Bendigo” There are 3 parts to the documents. First section has 22 parts, everything from “Tender - Insurance - Materials - Liability - Condition of Contract to the use of Sanitary conveniences. Second section has sections re “Carpenter and Joiner - Brick work - Plastering - Electrician - Painter and Glazier”. Each has sections under re their work to be done. Third section is a technical drawing of the Soldiers Memorial Institute minus the Main Hall, it shows scopes of work. The main works covered a new false ceiling in the Office, a new front door entrance to the Foyer in a different position, exhaust fan in the Billiard room, removal of a gate at the Stairwell entrance, fire place repairs, adding chair rails to walls to foyer, Committee room. These works were carried out. There was a false ceiling in the Meeting room but there was no mention re this in the above plans. This ceiling was removed during the 2016 - 2018 major renovations to the SMI. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. Fitted bodice with 1.5 cm deep stand-up collar. Long curved sleeve, tapering at the wrist, has a fine piping around the armhole. Wrist is trimmed with a piped, plain silver peaked false cuff, and two 3 cm deep pleated and piped ''frills''. Three covered buttons trim the diagonally cut decorative cuff. One metal hook, and hand stitched loop on the stand-up collar. 23 covered buttons ( one missing,others in various states of disrepair) extend from the neckline to the lower skirt. Front skirt is trimmed with a 7 cm deep band of plain silver silk, bordered by the striped fabric piping, and a 3 cm deep pleated frill on either side. Below this is a 25cm deep band of the striped fabric, at the lower edge of which are sewn four X 5 cm deep bands of pleated frills. At the centre back neckline are two X 20cm ''tails'' curved at each end and lined in plain silver silk. These are to be wrapped around the neckline, and fastened with a metal hook and eye, to form a 4cm deep rounded silver collar. Skirt back extends into a 34cm deep train. Brown cotton tape binds the hemline. Front of skirt is ruched from the centre buttoned section, in three sections either side, to the centre back panel, which is pleated, and extends into the train. Back waistline is trimmed with a 14cm wide bow, striped fabric, lined with plain silver fabric.A 7cm wide, and 34 cm long loop is stitched into the centre back seam, presumably used to hold, and lift the train above the ground. (The ends of the bow are trimmed with 10 cm deep black and silver fringing.) One metal ''bone'' in left front dart(now causing damage). One tiny 5.5cmX5.5cm shield shaped pocket on left front. Long sleeves are elaborately decorated with red felt and gold braid, and finished with three gold plastic buttons bearing the impression of a laurel wreath, and horn as a replica of the British Light Infantry. Two splits on back - one on each side of centre back. Red felt with four peaked stripes of gold braid, on the lower right sleeve - possibly indicates rank of the drummer. Red felt epaulettes trimmed with gold braid and buttons (as above). Two false pocket flaps - one either side of front. Fully lined with a woven patterned taffeta. Sleeves lined with cream polyester (?) with a self stripe. A red felt tab on either side of front revere collar, bearing a metal Leidertafel badge on each tab. One inside pocket on right front. Robin Boyd’s desk cupboard contained two exercise books (item D482.1-D482.2) and assorted articles, essays and other material regarding the building of the Sydney Opera House, inserted inside the front cover of Walkabout magazine, July 1966 (item P1377). This publication is one of those inserts.
