Summary

Nevermore was serialized between 1889 and 1890, and was then published as a book in 1892. The novel is a dramatic tale set against the backdrop of Victorian England and the 1850s Australian gold rush. The story follows Launcelot 'Lance' Trevanion, a proud and rebellious young Englishman who quarrels with his father and leaves for the Victorian goldfields of Ballarat to seek his fortune.
Lance's impulsive nature and poor judgment lead him into a web of misfortune. He is falsely accused of horse-stealing by a corrupt police magistrate, wrongfully imprisoned, and subjected to the brutal realities of the colonial penal system. The title Nevermore reflects the tragic, Edgar Allan Poe-esque downward spiral of the protagonist, exploring themes of family pride, mistaken identity, colonial injustice, and the impossibility of reclaiming lost innocence.
