"Alexander Colquhoun [Herald art critic 1914-1922 and feature writer for the Age 1926-1941] ... took private students in the first decade of the century, and one of these was Winifred Miles, who after her marriage in 1910 lived the remainder of her life in Ringwood. ... (She) began by doing charcoal studies of animals when she was in Balranald, but in later years moved to oils and then watercolours, travelling around Ringwood to find places to paint by means of a pony-driven governess-cart. Copy of newspaper article (Jan. 1958): "Out of the Past" "The first post office at Eltham as it appeared in the eighties (sic). This photo was in the possession of the Burgoyne family, whose association with the Postal Department ended yesterday when the new post office was opened." The article indicates the photo is from the 1880s however it actually pre-dates the connection of the Electric Telegraph line in 1877 - most likely early 1870s. The Telegraph Office was opened Thursday, June 7, 1877 and the lines were connected to the building above the awning near where the lower corner of the large sign is. A similar image of the building dated circa 1888 (EDHS_00139) shows the telegraph line connection. The awning has also been updated with corrugated iron in lieu of bark shingles and the false facade above the awning removed. It is possible these modifications were made to the building at the time of the telegraph line connection. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital imagesepp, shire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, eltham, post office

The first St. Albans post office opened in 1888, just one year after the township was established in 1887. At this time, St Albans was little more than a railway station, a handful of houses, and Alfred Padley’s speculative subdivision. The location of the first post office changed over time, from the Railway Station and to general stores. The first record of a post office at this site appears in the 1960 edition of the Sands & Mcdougall Directory. This collection of photographs captures the basic building structure of the post office at this site and the post office staff and their customers.5659.01 - Main Rd West 45 - St. Albans Post Office Photo 01.jpg 5659.02 - Main Rd West 45 - St. Albans Post Office Photo 02.jpg 5659.03 - Main Rd West 45 - St. Albans Post Office Photo 03.jpg 5659.04 - Main Rd West 45 - St. Albans Post Office Photo 04.jpg 5659.05 - Main Rd West 45 - St. Albans Post Office Photo 05.jpg main road west, st. albans, st. albans post office

J A Geer's grocery store operated from 1909-1912 on the site established by George Sim in 1884. He bought a house and added a shop where, in 1889, he established the first post office in the area. Prior to this residents had to go the Box Hill to collect mail. Date is approximate. This records one of the earliest businesses in Surrey Hills. To begin with, businesses developed along Canterbury Road rather than Union Road, in part because of the muddy nature of the land north of the railway line.Black and white photo taken from a postcard of Canterbury Road, near the corner of Union Road, looking west in 1906 or 1907. At this time, St Albans was little more than a railway station, a handful of houses, and Alfred Padley’s speculative subdivision. The location of the first post office changed over time, from the Railway Station to general stores and to the site on the corners of Main Road West and McKechnie Street. During the 1980's and 1990's, as the commercial centre of St. Albans shifted towards Alfrieda Street, on the east side of the railway line, Australian Post moved its post office closer to Alfrieda Street. To meet the needs of the St. Albans residents, Australia Post moved to a new location closer to the new St. Albans commercial centre.
