On the 17th of June, 1988, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) conducted an Arthritis Self Help Course in Warrnambool to train its regional members as volunteer Fitness Leaders. Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. Around 1987 to 1988, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) conducted an Exercise and Arthritis Training Course designed specifically to train volunteer members as Fitness Leaders. This photo depicts Stan Lacey, a registered AFV Fitness Leader who runs exercise classes at his workplace, attending the Fitness Leaders' training course with others at the AFV’s headquarters at Action House.
