Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick had a questionable character even before being posted to Greta Police Station in 1878. He made an attempt to arrest Dan Kelly but did not follow correct procedure. He went by himself and had also been drinking beforehand. While Fitzpatrick stated that he was assaulted and suffered a minor gun show wound at the hands of "Ned" Kelly and other family members, his claims were disputed by them. This postcard is one of a set of five stills from 'The Story of the Kelly Gang' a movie which premiered in Melbourne on Boxing Day 1906 and was the first multi-reel, feature-length film ever produced in the world. It was extremely popular with audiences but because it portrayed the Kelly Gang as heroes and the police as villains, the Victorian Government eventually banned it from being screened in 1912.
