The "John and Betty" books most commonly refer to the 1950s popular primary school readers published by the Education Department of Victoria in Australia. These early educational readers were authored by teacher and educator Betty Somerville and illustrated by Marjorie Howden.The John and Betty readers were often paired with large flashcards such as these from the 1950s well into the 1970s. Teachers used large cardboard flip versions of the book pages, accompanied by distinct "picture/word" and "sentence" flashcards.
