Historical information

The "John and Betty" books most commonly refer to the 1950s popular primary school readers published by the Education Department of Victoria in Australia. These early educational readers were authored by teacher and educator Betty Somerville and illustrated by Marjorie Howden.The John and Betty readers were often paired with large flashcards such as these from the 1950s well into the 1970s. Teachers used large cardboard flip versions of the book pages, accompanied by distinct "picture/word" and "sentence" flashcards. Children would match individual word cards to sentences.

Physical description

24 large thick 'flashcards' with sentences and coloured illustrations to match the 1950's primary school reader John and Betty. There are a few doubles of cards. Seven cards have upper case outlines of letters.

Inscriptions & markings

On the back of seven cards are large outlines of uppercase letters in black texta pen: ' A, C, E9(x2) N, O, P'
