The maker’s initials on the back of the patter, “A.F. & S.” are one of the marks of Alfred Fenton & Sons (& Co) of Brook Street Works (renamed Century Street in 1950’s), Hanley, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent in the United Kingdom. The partners were Alfred Fenton, James Tunstall Fenton, Arthur Fenton and John Fenton. Other initials used are “A F & Co.” The company operated from 1887 to 1901. According to the London Gazette of January 10, 1899, the Earthenware Manufacturers “Alfred Fenton & Sons“ also had a location in Australia at the corner of Elizabeth Street and 314-316 Bourke Street Melbourne Victoria, and Bond Street, Sydney, and in New Zealand at Manse Street, Dunedin. The maker’s mark also includes the word ‘PRAHRAN’, which is an inner suburb of Melbourne. “Prahran” may have been the name of this particular pattern or even the location chosen in preference to the location ‘Melbourne’. The Melbourne address was purchased from a long established drapery business, Wright and Neil, between 1911-1914 by Sidney Myer. Myer constructed his 1914 building in on this site in Bourke Street. This brooch with its floral design is typical of the jewellery worn during the Romantic Period of the Victorian Era, when Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, was alive 1837-1861. During this period flower motifs and brooches and pins were popular.This brooch is representative of jewellery worn during the Romantic Period of Queen Victoria's rule, 1837-1861.Brooch, light weight, rose coloured gold metal with red- brown onyx stone. Flower shaped brooch with six petals, stone attached, with rose design stem which is flanged on back. Backing plate is also rose coloured metal. A small ring is attached to the top of the brooch where the safety chain is attached. There are two small holes on back of brooch. A chain is attached to the horizontal pin on the back, and has a pin on its end. There is an Inscription engraved on the back. The Cambridge Glass Company was chartered in 1873 by a group of Cambridge, Ohio businessmen. But it was not until 1899, when the site was purchased by the newly formed National Glass Company, that funds became available to start the construction of this new glass factory. n 1901, The Cambridge Glass Company was organized by the owners of the National Glass Company of Pennsylvania Arthur J. Bennett, a native of England, was hired to manage this new factory. Having experience in the china and glass trades. Many of the patterns were of Mr. Bennett's own design. Sometime around 1903-1904 the company's first trademark came into being, the words "Near Cut" pressed into the glass. Cambridge Glass soon became known worldwide for quality in both "crystal and colours, pressed and blown’. 1984. The National Cambridge Collectors purchased many of the moulds, all of the etching/decorating plates and other assets of Cambridge Glass from Imperial.
