He met and married Jessie PITTS in 1936. He enlisted in the airforce in 1941 and was studying to be a pilot when he retired. Cat No 5821,5822,5823 Leigh Joseph JONES/ Born Richmond 2 June 1922 to 18 March 1983. Married Dorothy Jean PITTS 18 March 1944. Applied to join the army but was too young. Returned to join as his fathers name Lewis John same initials and old enough. He served and was discharged as this name. He was aboard ship when it was discovered too late. He served in New Guinea. Post war he applied to have his service name corrected, he was a champion sports man, cycling, football, bowling. Bennetts Hardware shop was in Hargeaves St near the entrance to Allan's Walk in the 1950's. Beehive buildings. This was originally the Sandhust Mining Exchange and as such was the oldest purpose built exchange in Australia and was one of only two in regional Australia. It was initially established in the 1850's to service the miners of the area. It's first double story incarnation as the Bendigo Stock Exchange, contained up to 2000 stockbrokers and 5000 shareholders. In 1871 the building burnt to the ground and the new and current building was completed in 1872. Little is known of the competition in those days. The Club reformed in 1921. Beech Forest changed its colours to Richmond colours and used a ground south of the township, now known as the Football Break Road in the Forest Commission pine plantation. In 1922 the site of the present ground had been purchased but it was 1929 before it was first used, and it was used every year, except 1953 when G. Bellchamber's paddock was used while major renovations were carried out on their home ground. It was in the same year, 1929, that they changed their colours yet again to the blue with white V colours, which they retained until the Club disbanded. Prior to entering the VFA Moorabbin enjoyed premiership success in the Federal Football League on a dozen occasions, including four times in succession between 1945 and 1948.. ...Prior to entering the VFA Moorabbin enjoyed premiership success in the Federal Football League on a dozen occasions, including four times in succession between 1945 and 1948.. ...Moorabbin played initially in the Federal Football League, making their debut in 1909 and competing until 1950. The club wore a black and white jumper like Collingwood. During this time the club won 12 premierships, including winning all six premierships staged over the nine years between 1940 and 1948 (the competition was in recess from 1942 until 1944) Moorabbin had a comparatively brief but quite successful stint in the Victorian Football Association between 1951 and 1963. The club won premierships in 1957 and 1963, and managed a highly impressive overall success rate of 62.5%. However, there was a sensational aftermath to the 1963 flag as Moorabbin fell foul of the VFA after agreeing to sell its ground to VFL club St Kilda. After a bitter wrangle the eventual upshot was that the Moorabbin committee voted 19-2 to disaffiliate from the Association. Before joining the VFA Moorabbin had spent four highly successful decades as a member of the Federal Football League and its precursor the Federal Football Association. During its debut season in the VFA the club played its home matches at Cheltenham, but the development of a new ground in Moorabbin had been a condition of entry. By 1952 that new ground, Moorabbin Oval, was ready, and over the ensuing eleven seasons it would become one of the most difficult grounds in the VFA for visiting teams to win at. Prior to entering the VFA Moorabbin enjoyed premiership success in the Federal Football League on a dozen occasions, including four times in succession between 1945 and 1948.. The Moorabbin name is now used by the Moorabbin Kangaroos Football Club in the Southern Football League. The club was originally known as Moorabbin West Football Club, taking on the new name from 2003. Moorabbin Football Club was established 1909 and was very successful playing in the Federal Football League, Victorian Football Association. The photograph shows Ray Bilney - second from the left. Born 2 November 1945 ...Organised sport and clubs began in 1919 with the formation of the Junior Technical School Students' Association. Clubs included the Rifle Club, Wireless Club, Senior Cadet team, Photography Club and Bugle Band. Sport was the Associations main concern. The House system was developed and boys competed within this structure. In 1926 the North Central Junior Technical School Sports Association was formed. Students from the district competed against each other in football, cricket and tennis. The number of schools increased and more sports were introduced. Ballarat Junior Technical School was a strong competitor. Many ex-students made a mark in sport out of the Ballarat area. The photograph shows Ray Bilney - second from the left. Born 2 November 1945, Ray began cycling aged 10. In 1963 he was Australian Junior Road Champion. From 1964 to 1966 he was Australian Senior Road Champion. He was in the Australian team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and came 4th in the race, aged 18 years. In 1966 he went to the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica and won a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970. Ray was Ballarat Sportsman's Club Sportsman-of-the-Year 1965/66 and inducted into their Hall of Fame. In 1965 Ray was Cyclist-of-the-Year and won the coveted Sir Hubert Opperman Trophy. In May 2013, Ray was inducted into the Victorian Cycling Hall-of-Fame. During his time at the Junior Technical School, he sporting abilities were evident and in 1961 he was Top Sportsman of the school. The same year he was one of eight boys chosen to be Prefects of the school. He is an Alumni of Federation University. Gilbert William Arthur "Gil" Duthie AM (21 May 1912 – 13 June 1998) was an Australian politician. Born in Nhill, Victoria, he was educated at state schools and at the University of Melbourne before becoming a schoolteacher and farmer in rural Victoria. In 1938 he was ordained a Methodist minister, and in 1944 he moved to Latrobe, Tasmania. In 1945 and 1946 Duthie was directly involved with Australian rules football in the town. He was secretary of the Latrobe Football Club as well as playing senior games for it in the NWFU competition.[1] In 1946, Gil Duthie was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Wilmot, defeating sitting Liberal MP Allan Guy. From February 1956 until December 1972 he was the Labor Party Whip in the House. He held the seat until 1975, when he was defeated by Liberal candidate Max Burr.
