Both estates where originally subdived and sold in the mid 1920s. The collection includes a letter, a list of owners and their address details and the lot they own, and plans of both estates, which have been cut out of the original estate sale posters. Widows beside trading tables of craft items and food at Legacy House. It could have been an annual fete run by the widows. Names unknown except for Elaine Ward who is seated in a red jacket in the third photo. There is a laundry basket as a hamper, perhaps for a raffle prize. The baked items have as sign "With compliments of Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse" so the items may have been donated for sale. A poster on the wall is of Daryl Somers and says "Hey Hey its Legacy Day" so it was either 1996 or 1997 when Legacy invited Daryl Somers to be Personality of the Year in 1996 and again in 1997. He participated in many events to promote Legacy, including a parachute jump, a car raffle, lunches and compering a concert, 'A Night to Remember' (see 00853, 00854, 00997, 00056).A record of the type of activities Legacy provided as a social outlet for widows. This is a poster advertising the sale of the Lyndoch sub-division in Warrnambool with the sale of 200 housing sites. The sale took place about 1958 with the land sold by Frederick Gill, a Warrnambool jeweller. The land was previously owned by George Rolfe who had acquired the land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in the 1880s and named the property ‘Lyndoch’. He bought the surrounding land at a later time. This sub-division came to be known as the Gill Estate. It was a valuable site as many of the allotments fronted the sea and others were adjacent to the Hopkins River. This poster, although tattered, is of interest as it has many details of the Gill Estate sub-division and will be useful to researchers. This is a cream-coloured paper poster with black and red printing. The poster has a small map in a circle shape showing the location of the streets and a larger map section showing the streets and the allotments to be sold. The poster is in two pieces and the edges are torn and, in some sections, missing. in 1922 Kergunyah Park homestead was built by David Wallace in the late 1800's and remained in the family until the sale in 1922 when it was bought by John Woodside (grandfather of Ewen Wallace) whose family retained it until 1938. Another family named Wallace bought the property in 1938 and this family's descendants are still running it in 2005.David and Henrietta Wallace purchased the original holding and built Kergunyah Park homestead in the late 1800's running cattle on the property. They arrived in Australia in 1867 with their 3 children and were early settlers in the district. Their descendants still live in the district. Their family demonstrates how properties were passed on to the next generation. The poster is an example of the advertising of the sale of land in 1922, the size of land & blocks and the conditions of sale at the time.Large cloth map mounted under glass with a brown wooden frame. The poster belonged to an Emerald real estate agency which is no longer in operation. The donor of this sign had advised that the sign dates from the 1980s and has provided information about the proprietors at that time (who were not part of the Nobelius family). The agency was originally founded by Arch Nobelius, one of the sons of famous Emerald Nurseryman, Carl Axel Nobelius in 1922. Arch Nobelius sold it in 1946.The Nobelius Real Estate Agency is part of a broader historical narrative that includes the establishment of the Nobelius Nursery and the family's significant contributions to the development of Emerald. This poster was made for the sale of the 1,440 acres of Orbost Station after the death of Sir William Clarke. It was sold by Edward Trenchard & Co. which was the oldest Stock and Station agent in Victoria assisted by Desailly, Macarthur & Co were livestock experts. Sir William Clarke had taken over the Orbost run from the McLeods in 1870. When Sir William died the property was owned by his son, Rupert who offered the land for sale at 4 pounds per acre. No sale resulted and the property was leased for a few years until in 1898 it was subdivided and sold to many of Orbost's first families. Fanny Swan (formerly Wood, nee Poole) came to Gippsland in the 1840s with her first husband, William Wood, where they became proprietors of the Shakespeare Hotel at Stratford. William Wood died in 1855, and in 1856 she married Samuel Swan. Together they acquired considerable property in and around Stratford. Samuel Swan died in 1880 at Stratford, and Fanny Swan died at Stratford in 1895.This illuminated address which documents the final payment for the Wesleyan Church building in 1892 has historic significance for Stratford Historical Society as it is located in the actual building. It also has social significance for the township as Mrs Fanny Swan was one of the earliest and best known business leaders in the area running the iconic Shakespeare hotel/boarding house for many years. It has aesthetic significance as an example of a illuminated address produced on a printing press with gold ink, rather than the usual handwritten form. White wooden frame containing an illuminated address to Mrs S. Swan from the Wesleyan Church at Stratford 2 January 1892. It is press-printed in gold ink on what appears to be a blank, pre-printed poster. It reads: Stratford, 2 January 1892 Mrs S. Swan, Stratford Dear Madam, We, the Minister and Trustees of the Stratford Wesleyan Methodist Church desire to tender you our most sincere thanks for your very generous donation of Fifty Pounds handed to us to-day by Mr George Poole in aid of clearing off the debt on our church.
