It is located on the massive sand heap of R.W.Hammond's quartz crushing battery, and the plantation served to enhance the appearance of a large-scale mining precinct which was by 1925 seen as an eyesore from the bygone mining days". Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 39 - An apology from Harold and Jean Cuming over to belief that they would have a transport tow based at Mt. Buller in the coming season. The Forestry Commission of Victoria had not approved their application. They later established a business at Falls Creek. Page 49 - Photo by S. This family history book was published as a family record of the Ah Chow family. A limited number of copies were printed. Thomas William (Bill) Ah Chow was a Chinese-Australian soldier, farmer, fire lookout and legendary bushman of East Gippsland in Victoria. Many Chinese came to the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s to seek their fortune at the Omeo and Cassilis diggings. Many of the immigrants later settled and integrated into their local communities working as farm labourers, tending market gardens, making furniture, running grocery stores and cafes or practising Chinese medicine. Thomas William "Bill" Ah Chow of Bruthen, Victoria attempted to enlist early in the War but was rejected for being "not substantially of European origin". Undeterred, he reapplied and was accepted in June 1917. During his service with the 5th Battalion, he was wounded at least three times. After the War, Bill returned to Bruthen where he drove sheep, worked cattle and eventually assisted in the building of roads through the area. He became a Forestry Commission fire-spotter and built a hut called 'Moscow Villa' in 1942. He lived in the hut during the summer months and in winter, returned to his family in Ensay. Whenever there was fire danger, he rode his horse up to the fire tower on Mt Nugong and acted as look-out. Bill worked for the Forestry Commission for more than twenty years and came out of retirement to continue his duties when no suitable replacement could be found. Bill died in 1967 and is buried in Omeo. Moscow Villa still stands and is a popular camping site This is a useful reference item. As a family history it is detailed and contains useful copies of personal documents. Bill Ah Chow, along with the Ah Chow family were well known in Orbost and East Gippsland. This booklet is a testament to his life. A soft covered 97pp book with a cream cover. On the front is a coloured photograph of a Chinese man in traditional robe and hat. On the back cover is Moscow Villa. It contains information, copies of 1949 photographs, documents, hand -written letters and a will. The photograph appears to have been taken from the rear of what was then the Grenville Shire Offices. It shows a number of houses, including houses owned by Mrs Bobby Nicol (facing York Street, on the corner of Clyde Street) and the Ching family (facing Clyde Street, on the opposite corner of York Street), and a house owned at that time by the Forestry Commission (on the corner of Clyde and Adair Streets). A glimpse of the Linton State School and the Court House/police station can be seen in the background. Land which is now part of the Golden Plains Council Depot (in foreground) appears to be unused. The photograph appears on p. 29 of 'A Pictorial History of Linton', published in 1989. Mrs. Hedwig Bruckner was born in Answar, Germany, in 1920. She emigrated to Beechworth in 1955 at age 32 with her two children. Her husband was a prisoner of war in Russia for 6 years. After emigrating, Hedwig worked at the Beechworth tannery, but worked for the majority (20+) of her working years as a housekeeper for Doctor Collins. Her husband worked the nightshift at the Forestry Commission. Hedwig's testimony paints the picture of a life that was "very hard". When they moved into their house in 1956, they had no money for doors. Their two eldest children were pulled out of the convent school due to lack of funds, and their son worked as a milkman from a young age to supplement the family's income. Hedwig's testimony notes language difficulties and the number of European emigrant families in Beechworth, with which the Bruckners formed community bonds. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Mrs. Hedwig Bruckner's oral history is significant for its insight into the perspectives and experiences of European emigrant families to Beechworth, noting their unique experiences and hardships of language, food, work, forging community bonds, and adjusting to country Australian life. The oral history project more broadly is significant for its capture of the lives of ordinary Beechworth residents from incredibly divergent backgrounds, which has led to a rich, nuanced and diverse range of accounts of Beechworth.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. In 1956 an international surfing competition was staged on Torquay Beach in conjunction with the Melbourne Olympics. A number of countries were invited including the USA and its Territory of Hawaii, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon, Great Britain. An international surf carnival was held on 25th November and Australian championships were held on 2nd December. Australia was represented by each state with the majority of teams coming from NSW (64), then Queensland (18), Victoria (12), South Australia (7), Western Australia (7) and Tasmania (3). The Victorian teams were Anglesea, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Ocean Grove, Point Leo, Point Lonsdale, Port Fairy, Portland, RAAF College, Sorrento/Portsea, Torquay and Warrnambool. Preparation for the carnivals was immense. The mouth of Spring Creek was diverted closer to the bluff to allow more sand area for the competitors. Forestry Commission tractors were brought to do the task and they also smoothed other sections of the beach and covered rocky areas. Wire fences were erected to enclose the spectators' area. VIPs who accepted to attend were Prime Minister R G Menzies, State Premier H E Bolte, High Commissioners of South Africa, Ceylon and New Zealand and the Ambassador of USA. International visitors included Rusty Millar USA Chief Lifeguard and Duke Kahanamoku. Australian VIPs included Andrew "Boy" Charlton who set five world swimming records and won three silver and one bronze Olympic medal. Special trains ran from Flinders St Station from 8.45am connecting with buses to Torquay. Torquay locals were called upon to volunteer as ushers, gatekeepers and for other event duties. Torquay SLSC entered 52 competitors across all events both junior and senior. 70,000 people attended the International Carnival. The Americans came with narrow fibre-glass surfboards which were much faster than the Australian boards. The reel and line method of rescue was a new concept to the Americans who wore a belt and carried a reel of line into the water and let it out as they swam to the patient. New Zealand won the march past and Hawaii won the beach relay and the board race. In the Australian Championships NSW won the rescue and resuscitation event and a Victorian (J Fountain, Lorne) won the belt race.108 page souvenir programme, colour cover. The graduates of the School formed the Victorian Old Forestry Students Association and produced an annual magazine Sylvanite, from 1920. The Association aimed to preserve the school spirit, personal contacts and close friendships. The magazine was a means of not only maintaining contact between the foresters after graduation but also serving as a technical journal. But the Association and the magazine seem to have fizzled out by 1930, which helps to date this medallion. In 1934, the first issue of The Victorian Forester was published. This was replaced in 1953 with the Victorian State Foresters Association Newsletter which continued until demise of the Forests Commission in the mid-1980s. Both publications aimed share information about technical, social and other matters to all forestry staff. The Forests Commission Retired Personnel Association (FCRPA) was formed in 1979 and continues to this day with over 150 members.
