Fortuna Villa was owned from 1855 to 1871 by Christopher and Theodore Ballerstedt, Australia’s first mining magnates. In 1871 it was purchased by George Lansell (The Quartz King) being one of Australia’s most successful and adventurous nineteenth century gold mine owners and speculators. Lansell made numerous alterations and extensions to the building and it remained in the Lansell family until 1935. This is a set of eight photographs of Defence Force Service Medal presentations by LTCOL Peter Eddy, the Commanding Officer of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 8th of November 1982. On this occasion the Defence Force Service Medal was presented to LT Keys (ARES), SGT Alan Timcke (ARES), SSGT L. Davidson and WO2 Kevin MacQuire for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. LTCOL Peter Eddy was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982. These 35 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. This photograph was most likely taken circa 1975 in the front garden of Fortuna Villa, during an Australian Army General’s visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo circa 1975. As there are no annotations on the photo, the names of the General, the aide de camp officer and guests are unknown. LTCOL Ridge was the CO of Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1972 to 1973 and continued as the CO of the renamed Army Survey Regiment from 1974 to 1975. This is a set of nine photographs of medal presentations at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. In photos .1P to .8P, the Defence Force Service Medal was presented to personnel in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service, or the Clasp for each further 5-year period of service. The photos were taken on four separate occasions. Photos .1P to .3P were taken on the parade ground. LTCOL John Nolan was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1965 to 1969. He was subsequently promoted to COL and was the Director of Military Survey from 1972 to 1975. MAJ Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID was subsequently promoted to LTCOL and was the CO of the unit from 1969 to 1970. This is a set of nine photographs of Defence Force Service Medal presentations by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979. The photos were taken next to the flagpole in Fortuna Villa’s front garden. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. On this occasion the CGS presented the Defence Force Service Medal to WO2 Alex Cairney, WO1 Bob Mason and WO2 Ken Slater for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. It is likely the unidentified UK Exchange senior NCO was the recipient of the UK Army’s equivalent service medal. Other key staff appearing in these photos are LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980 and WO1 Aub Harvey, who was RSM from 1976 to 1982. MAJ Don Swiney MBE was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1985 to 1987. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and was Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corp from November 1988 to January 1991, and the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1993 to January 1996. The Bi Annual Planning Conferences were to plan and coordinate the activities of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. The conferences were chaired by the Director of the Survey Corps and were attended by representatives from all elements of the Corps. The first photograph was probably taken at a media event announcing the introduction of the Heidelberg Speedmaster printing press in late 1990. LTCOL Rene van den Tol was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1989 to 1991. Partly obscured behind the CO was Mr Bruce Reid, who was the newly elected federal member for Bendigo. The media event was held in Wayzgoose Hall, Lithographic Squadron’s new purpose-built building constructed to house the Speedmaster 102 printing press. The remaining 29 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.
