Ballarat East was historically a separate municipality than Ballaarat. The streets developed along gold leads and early tracks. The Public Park Botanic Gardens and Recreation Reserve is now Mount Xavier Golf Course, and Ballarat Secondary College Eastern Campus. Ballarat East High School is situated in Fussell Street, Ballarat East. In the year 1967 the headmaster Mr O'Connor retired after 13 years at the school. He was there from its inception in the early 1950s, when classes only ran to Form 3 (Year 9). The Wodonga Pharmacy was opened on 8 September 1952 at 166 High Street, Wodonga by Albury chemist Mr. Arthur Fussell. The building had previously been Charlie Edmonson's white goods store. A year later it was acquired by Mr. Ken Moir who had moved from Shepparton, Victoria to manage the business. The original premises were sold so the business moved to 176 High Street in 1954.
