This stained glass was originally installed at Geelong Town Hall following its expansion in 1917. The Geelong Council involved the staff and former students of the Gordon Technical College in designing the artwork and aesthetic of the building. Arthur S. Pittock, former student and local glazier, was responsible for the design and construction of the large stained glass window in the stair hall. The window was described as “a special feature” in the new building with the leaded glass work using “the motif throughout in Greek form, of admirable colour”. The window showcases the City of Geelong’s original coat of arms, featuring images of Geelong’s early industries: sailing, wool, wine and wheat production, and a kangaroo as an inescutcheon. During the redevelopment of City Hall in the late 1960's the stained glass window was removed from the building and placed in the basement carpark. The National Wool Museum has taken responsibility of the window and removed it from the car park to be conserved and housed safely. This ash tray is a souvenir of the City of Geelong and has been inscribed and used in 1927 as a presentation piece by the Southern Union Insurance Company of Australia. It has been presented to an employee of the company, N. Robilliard. He is possibly the son of James and Ellen Robilliard, De Jersey Norman Robilliard, who died in Warrnambool in 1973. This ash tray is of interest as an example of the type of gift given to employees in the 1920s. It is believed that the recipient was a resident of Warrnambool. This is a circular clear glass ash tray with a silver-coloured metal rim around the top edge. There are four metal scoops and a metal badge affixed to the top rim. This book was awarded by Geelong Grammar to Walter Armstrong in 1881. It was donated to the Ballarat College library by his grandson W Mick U Armstrong (1944). Mick attended Ballarat College 1937 - 1942. In 1936 the Weatherly Library was established at Ballarat College and a community book drive resulted in personal copies of books owned by members of the school community being donated to the library over the next 10-20 years. The Ballarat Junior Technical School Cadet team were the champions at the South Street Competitions 1918-1919. The Ballarat Junior Technical School Cadets were established in 1917 by Lieutenant Harold G Wakeling. According to Neil Leckie, Manager of the Ballarat Ranger Military Museum: * Originally 12 – 14 year olds went to Junior Cadets attached to their school. * From age 14 – 17 they were Senior Cadets attached to the local militia unit. * After 1 July of the year a Cadet turned 18, the Cadet left the Senior Cadets and became a member of the Citizen Military Force. * In October 1918 the AIF, Militia and Cadets were renamed to give some connection to the AIF battalion raised in the area. Ballarat saw: 8th Australian Infantry Regiment comprising: * 8th Battalion AIF renamed 1st Battalion 8th Australian Infantry Regiment * 70th Infantry Militia renamed 2nd Battalion 8th Australian Infantry Regiment * 70th Infantry Cadets renamed 3rd B, 8th Australian Infantry. 39th Australian Infantry Regiment comprising: * 39th Battalion AIF renamed 1st Battalion 39th Australian Regiment * 71st Infantry Militia renamed 2nd Bn, 39th Australian Infantry Regiment * 71st Infantry Cadets renamed 3rd Bn, 39th Australian Infantry Regiment Prior to the reorganisation in 1918 the 18th Brigade was the 70th, 71st and 73rd Infantry. John Garbutt was Principal of Ballarat College for thirty-three years - 1877-1909. He was educated at Geelong National Grammar School and in 1860 was the first dux of the college. These are original items of VX5104 L/Col VJ Schofield MBE who served with 23rd Battalion (The City of Geelong Regiment). In 1929 this Battalion was amalgamated with the 21st Battalion to become 23rd/21st Battalion and adopted the territorial designation of 'The City of Geelong Regiment/The Victorian Rangers'. The Battalion went to the Northern Territory during WW2 before being disbanded, however VX5104 VJ Schofield became redeployed and served in New Guinea during WW2. He was awarded an MBE for his service. (Reference The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) Friday 20 July 1945. (Awards for Service in Papua-New Guinea). The original plaques were located at the Geelong Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airman Woollen Mill (commonly referred to as the RS&S Mill). Schofields Father was responsible for the raising of the Mill, with Federal Funding, he was the CEO. It is not known if Victor John Schofield worked at this Mill but the plaques were found there and donated to the Geelong RSL Sub Branch by Roger Burt CEO of Godfrey Hirst Group during the Hirst takerover of the RS&S Mill.Two Plaques - one the Rising Sun, one the Maxwell Family Crest which is related to L/Col Schofield MBE.
