This was the southern part of the colony of New South Wales, which the Colonial Government did not want settled at that time. After the Henty family crossed Bass Strait and settled at Portland in 1834 others quickly followed. The north bank was chosen because a small waterfall, or rapids, stopped further progress up the river. The waterfall also separated the tidal movement, providing a vital supply of fresh water. The site had previously been noted by the colony of New South Wales' surveyor, Charles Grimes, in 1803. The north bank also offered more stable, suitable ground. The crate of patterns was donated by the Briggs family in the early years of Flagstaff Hill, along with other related items such as brassware, tools and machinery. The donated items were displayed in a simulated Brass Foundry in the Village along with other working crafts, trades and services found in a Maritime town. The items were on show from the completion of the building in 1986 until 1994 when the building was repurposed. The patterns represent the trades of foundering and metalwork, both supporting maritime industries such as shipwrights and boatbuilders. Farmers, manufacturers and other local industries also needed the castings made by foundries. The Brass Foundry included a historic Cornish chimney set up as a working model, to tell the story of smelted metal heated in furnaces then be poured into the sand moulds. This chimney was made from specially curved bricks and is now about two-thirds of its full height when originally located at the Grassmere Cheese factory. Panning dishes were used for washing fine gold from river sediments or from the residue trapped in cradles and puddling tubs. They were often used on the edge of streams/rivers to sift gold from alluvial soil or crushed quartz. This simple pan would have been filled with sand and gravel which might have contained gold. The pan was submerged in the water and shaken to sort the gold from the gravel and other material, with the lighter material gradually being washed over the lip until only the heavy deposits, such as gold, remained at the bottom. (ref. Museum Victoria) This pan was used by George Henry Douglas Russell Snr. As a young man prior to his enlistment in WW1 he panned for gold using this dish. During the war he became a vet sergeant in charge of horse lines.Gold panning is the oldest and simplest method of extracting gold. Gold pans had widespread use in alluvial gold fields where water is available. This item is an example of the type of pan commonly used on Victorian gold fields.A circular dull metal panning dish which has a wide rolled top lip which tapers down to a smaller diameter for the base which is flat. The pan has been made from ironmetal which has a coating of another metal with a matte grey finish. Georg Lansell's brother Wootton Lansell's was Born in Margate, Kent, England, son of a grocer and tallow chandler.Worked as a seaman, with a mariner's certificate issued in 1844, he Arrived in Australia in 1850, initially working as a mounted trooper in Adelaide before moving to Bendigo in 1852 during the gold rush. After some success in gold prospecting, Lansell became a carpenter and then opened a butcher's store in View Point, Bendigo. He Invited his brothers George and William to join him; together they expanded into soap, candle, and tallow businesses. The partnership dissolved after three years, with Wootton turning to farming on 500 acres at Leichardt, while George became known as Bendigo's 'Gold King. Wotton Married Helen Hall in 1854 in Adelaide; they had one son (Thomas George William) and three daughters. Wootton invested in mining and was involved in several mining directorates. Around 1879, Wootton built a substantial brick and stone house (Myrtle Villa) with eight main rooms, which remains in the family. The house is notable for its original features, such as sand-colored tile-patterned wallpaper and a four-poster bed where nine of his ten grandchildren were born. The garden is sustained by a permanent spring and retains much of its original character. The house is still occupied by his descendants, notably his twin granddaughters Alice Lansell and Neva (Mrs. D. W. Jenkins). The family has preserved the home's historical character, with careful updates and retention of original furnishings and heirlooms. The Lansell name is closely associated with Bendigo's early gold-mining history and development. Charles George De Beauvoir Tupper was the son of Daniel William and Elizabeth Tupper. He entered naval college in 1885 after securing a Royal Navy cadetship. Lieutenant Tupper transferred from HMS Swallow to HMS Racer in May 1893. Both ships were operating from the Cape of Good Hope station at the time. In September 1893 HMS Racer found itself in the middle of Brazil’s third military coup in four years. The squadron of British ships in Guanabara Bay comprised HMS Beagle, Racer and Sirius. Just before 2 pm on the afternoon of 3 November 1893 a party from each of the ships in the British squadron sailed up the harbour to obtain sand and enjoy a little land based recreation. Apparently, this was a weekly event and the sand was used to swab the ships’ decks. They landed on Governador Island, the largest of the hundred and thirty or so islands in the bay. The island was under the control of the navy insurgents and had two magazines or stores for powder and shells. The cutters from the HMS Racer and Beagle landed on the beach between the two stores. Charles was killed when the powder magazine exploded at 3.40 pm. Charles' father Daniel William Tupper was brevetted Colonel in 1866 and when Brigadier General George Jackson Carey was appointed to command the Australian forces and came to Melbourne, Daniel accompanied him. When Sir Charles Darling, the Governor of Victoria was recalled to England, Carey became Acting Governor of Victoria from May to August 1866. Daniel Tupper served as his Aide-de-Camp or private secretary during this time. Carey returned to England in 1867 to command the 2nd Infantry Brigade at Aldershot with Daniel Tupper as his Aide-de-Camp.Portrait with stained wooden frame. No glass covering the picture.
