This framed certificate was presented to J. G. Boyes in recognition for his many years of membership and service to the Bacchus Marsh Lodge of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. The certificate was presented at a social evening held at the Bacchus Marsh Mechanics Hall on Saturday 10 September 1938. The social was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Bacchus Marsh Lodge for the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. MU100F - membership and competition. 1966-67 winners in "B" Class - Loyal Orbost Lodge.Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. This was a time of 'look after yourself' as the Colonial Governments did not provide pensions or benefits. The Grand Order of Oddfellows was a friendly Society founded in Manchester in 1798. It began in Australia in 1844 with the first Victorian branch established in 1854. The first mention of the Eaglehawk group was in 1868.Small ceremonial apron for the "Grand United order of Odd Fellows" on white/cream silk cotton sateen with blue tape border. Centre to screen print main panel has large printed crest showing quartered shield (top left) hour glass (top right) crossed keys (bottom right) dove with olive branch (bottom left) Noah's Ark. In centre of shield is a right hand palm forward with heart symbol. Supporters to shield, woman left holding sword and scales next to seated lion, woman on right holding mirror and flaming torch next to seated sheep. In centre above the shield is a seated women with four children, one at breast. Banner at base of women and shield reads "Amicitia Amor et Veritas". Long tapes top left and top right corners. Each coloured degree related to a particular value of the Manchester United Oddfellows. Purple certificate was related to charity. The Bendigo chapter of the Manchester United Oddfellows began in 1854.Blu folder. On one side the coloured logo of the Independet Order of Oddfellows in Victoria, Bendigo District, Manchester Unity Friendly Society. On the other the inscription: Purple Degree Certificate - We hereby certifythat brother R. G. Evans a member of the loyal Albert lodge, presented to us a certificate from his lodge entatling him to receive the Purple Dergee, which was duly conferred upon him at a Past Grand's Lodge, held at the M.
