James Hossack and his wife, Penuel, arrived from Scotland to Geelong on Christmas Day 1852. "Granny" Hossack was born in 1821 and died in 1921 within two months of a century. James and Penuel had one daughter, Penuel who married Robert Pullar Cameron at Orbost. They had two sons, James(1858) and George(1860). James Hossack and his wife, Penuel, arrived from Scotland to Geelong on Christmas Day 1852. The Hossacks travelled to Australia on the "Ann Thompson"The Hossack family was a prominent Orbost family with strong ties to the Presbyterian Church in Orbost. Harriett Wilson was the wife of William Wilson, an active member of and preacher with the Linton Methodist congregation. This is one of two photographs of Mrs Wilson in the collection. This one appears to have been taken earlier than the other. The other photograph is Registration no. 480 (Box 14, also Mounted photograph 21), and shows a somewhat older Mrs Wilson, although Mrs Wilson is wearing the same dress in both photographs. An inscription on the back of the photograph says that this photograph was given by Mrs Wilson to F. Bryant on December 16, 1890. Part of Old Lintonian collection ; No. 126. Photographs of Mr Wilson are also in the collection - see Registration nos. 45, 479 & 642. It is understood that Mrs Wilson was one of the first teachers at Linton State School. Granny's Grave was erected in 1904 and recognises the first white woman though to be buried at Warrnambool, Victoria. Granny, or Mrs James Raddleston, died in 1848 when the Warrnambool settlement was around a year old. Harriet Wilson was the wife of William Wilson. The Wilsons were members of Linton's Methodist congregation. The original of this photograph of Mrs Wilson is in an album donated by Mrs Stella Surman (album in Box 13. Page 5, lower right). A pencil inscription next to the photograph reads "Burnt to death". Notes with the copy of the photograph in the Wilson family file say that Mrs Wilson smoked a pipe, set her clothes alight and died in the resulting fire. Mrs Wilson died on New Year's Day, 1900. Harcourt district exported immense quantities of apples and pears, each box containing fruit that had been sized (by diameter) so as to have uniform-sized fruit in the box, wrapped in tissue paper, all packed base- or stem-end against the cheek of its neigbouring piece, to restrict movement/bruising of the apples in transit. A colourful label on the end of the box had a space to insert the size and count, i.e. the number of pieces of fruit in the box. If the packer followed the chart the count was determined from the chart by reference to the diameter of the fruit as it came off the grader. Harcourt’s reputation for quality fruit was enhanced by the ability to deliver uniform-sized blemish-free and unbruised fruit which then attained premium prices in the market, contributing to the prosperity of the district.
