The house was built in 1905 and was the home of William and Emily Kleinert from 1905. William was a coach-builder, wheelwright and blacksmith. He moved from Prahran to Surrey Hills. His son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, it built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The Kleinert land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. The Kleinert property later became the South Surrey Park. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s. Ernest and Ida Kleinert lived on the corner of Scotsdale and Warrigal Roads. The donor of the photo Nada Harris, nee Kleinert, was Ernest and Ida's daughter. Ida lived to a good age (> 93 years) and in later life lived in Burwood.Black and white photo of a group of men and women posed against the backdrop of a timber house. On his left is Harold Norman of Research. (Sam Howard played banjo). Mrs Read (Jock's mother) played piano by ear. Research called Normantown because no one could remember who was related to who." Note the school children; one of whom may be Jock Read. In April 1922, E.Gadd took over the West Bros. blacksmithing business at Eltham. He had many prior years’ experiences with horses and their ailments, such as diseased feet and bad breath. He advertised that he kept horse medicines in stock and was prepared to undertake clipping. [THE Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser AND Diamond Creek Valley Advocate. (1922, April 7). Retrieved July 31, 2025, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article57640818] A poster on the exterior wall of the shed promotes protection of vineyards from Prohibition by voting No. This would date this photo around March 1930. A vote was being held by the Victorian government which the vineyard growers were opposed to due to the ramifications it would have upon the wider industry for dried fruits and table grapes, etc as well and how it was in direct conflict with the federal government's actions of WW1 Soldiers Settlements on vineyards as it would ruin them. [HOW VINE GROWERS WOULD BE PENALISED (1930, March 28). Advertiser (Hurstbridge, Vic. : 1922 - 1939), p. 4 (AFTERNOON). Retrieved July 31, 2025, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article57762063] Edward Gadd died of pneumonia, July 1937. He had operated his coach building business in Eltham for about 17 years (1920-1937). He lived in Research and left a wife and three sons. He was actively involved with the Research Hall and was largely instrumental in its establishment. [Death of Mr. Edward Gadd. (1937, July 23). Advertiser (Hurstbridge, Vic. : 1922 - 1939), p. 1. Retrieved July 31, 2025, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article56845399] Following Gadd’s death, P. Sloan of Warrandyte took over the business, which he advertised as 'Eltham Shoeing Forge'. [Advertising (1937, July 30). Advertiser (Hurstbridge, Vic. : 1922 - 1939), p. 6. Retrieved July 31, 2025, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article56845470] The photo was taken around March 1930 and Gadd operated his business between 1922 and 1937. This would suggest the shed would be visible in the November 1931 aerial photograph. Looking past the shed to the left the topography is relatively flat. The most probable location for the blacksmith shop, being a coach builder, would be near or on the main road. The only area in Eltham relative to other businesses that has a flattish topography with hills in the distant is around the railway station. E. Gadd’s Blacksmith shop was situated on the western side of Main Road, between Arthur and Dudley Streets and does appear to be visible in the 1931 aerial photo held by the Society. A map drawn up by Doug Orford of businesses and homes along Main Road in the 1930s shows the Gadd blacksmith shop in this precise location, just south of Staff’s general store. (See EDHS_05122). Other photos show the blacksmith shop adjacent to the Railway store and it had “Electrine Candles” advertising painted on the roof facing the southern approach along Main Road (SEPP_0611) and is just visible to the left of Lloyd’s Store c.1916-c.1922 (EDHS_02160). The rear of the shop facing the railway line is visible in EDHS_05593 Panorama at Eltham c. 1925. ... grape growing. Terraces Vineyards Goonawarra James Goodall Francis A coloured photograph of a stone wall with a notice to the left of the wall and long dried grassland in the front. ...The stone wall is part of the terraces that were built into the hillside at the winery at Goonawarra. They were constructed in the early days when the vineyard was established to terrace the hillside for growing vines. The winery was originally established by Joh Goodall Francis, a former member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. He acquired a parcel of crown land and proceeded to develop it as a vineyard. The terraces were built by vignerons, who were employed to work on the property. Goonawarra Winery was one of a number of vineyards that were established in the Sunbury area in the 1800s. The volcanic soil and temperate climate were ideal for grape growing.A coloured photograph of a stone wall with a notice to the left of the wall and long dried grassland in the front. Wodonga & District Historical Society IncDomestic object - Kiewa Spray Dried Ice Cream Mix, c1950s
... Kiewa Milk Dairies and butter factories Dairy Cooperatives Kiewa Spray Dried Ice Cream Mix Vanilla A tin of powder used to make ice cream at home. The front features a photo of a bowl of ice cream with grapes sprinkled on it. ...On 28th December 1892 it was decided to form a company to be called the Kiewa Butter and Cheese Factory and Creamery Co. Ltd. Share Capital was to be 3000 shares at one pound per share. The factory was built at Kiewa in 1893 and took in its first milk in December 1893. The first intake of cream from surrounding farmers took place in 1899. From 1900 to 1910 the Kiewa factory intake was affected by vagaries of weather. The following years were affected by the First World War and impacts on the London markets. In 1928 a new factory was constructed. In the 1940s a piggery was established to dispose of buttermilk and a dairy farm was established for effluent disposal. In the 1950s a new factory for the receival of milk and milk products was constructed with surplus milk being manufactured into spray dried milk powder. The Company was the first Victorian co-operative dairy to pasteurise and bottle milk for home delivery. They also promoted their milk which was Tuberculin free. Farmers were paid a premium for milk from herds declared T.B. free after testing by veterinary officers of the Kiewa and Mitta Valleys Veterinary Scheme. That important fact is noted on the label of this product. The Kiewa and Tallangatta Companies amalgamated in 1959 to form the North Eastern Dairy Company Limited. This product therefore predates that time. This item is significant because it was manufactured by a Dairy Cooperative in the Wodonga District.A tin of powder used to make ice cream at home. The front features a photo of a bowl of ice cream with grapes sprinkled on it. Background information about the product and instructions for use are included.Kiewa Spray Dried Ice Cream Mix Vanilla kiewa milk, dairies and butter factories, dairy cooperatives -
