Written on envelope attached: "This was sent to Aunty Mill from Aunty Grace. This photo was taken from our back gate opposite the post office. Miss Magan(?) was PM. The old Grenville Standard office run by Mr Adams. The little houses on the hill behind one was Mr Terrett a tailor who made the band uniforms. Mr Tom Bennett house butcher. The slaughter house is among the trees in the background. Note where the 'Law' is at the post office. I would like to see this enlarged. I think this photo is special because it shows the turntable where the trains used to turn before the rail went thru to Skipton which I remember all the [illegible] being made so many people working in Linton. As kids we loved to watch as the train came out facing a different way. The railway station master's house Mr Thompson was the SM. The old Grenville Standard office run by Mr Adams." Part of S E Surman collection (album) page 26 top left. The Shire of Grenville built the Shire Offices and Hall in the mid 1860s. The building comprised a Council Chamber on the ground floor, and upstairs a large hall with a stage, this room was used for meetings, balls, concerts and other entertainments. This building was replaced with a single-storey building in 1939. The Shire of Grenville was proclaimed in 1864. Shows horse-drawn vehicles and one electric tram arriving at the terminus, late in the evening. Shows the little shed at the terminus, and buildings on either side of the Sturt St. People waiting around the tram stop. The tram seems to have a "color" light indicator above the driver. Titled "Sturt Street, Ballarat" in red ink in the top left-hand corner. On the rear of the card, has the stamp "R. M. This photograph is believed to have been taken after the laying of the foundation stone for the Parish Hall, in 1909. The Ballarat Star of 1 September 1909 reported that "After the ceremony an adjournment was made to the Shire Hall, where afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the congregation." A copy of this photograph is in the St Paul's Church of England file. Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. Grenville College was founded in 1855 by W. Stellard as Ballarat Grammar School. The school was amalgamated by Mr Victor are Ballarat Grammar School in 1867 as the Ballarat Collegiate and Grammar School. Its name was changed to Grenville College in 1869. In 1908 Grenville College was situated in Mair Street, Ballarat, and the Principal was A.A. Buley. Pupils were educated for either commercial life or for the University.
